Down Species Information
Size 160mm or 6.3" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification The genus Chaetostoma is not straightforward to identify, but as a general rule, the species has spines behind the gill-cover (interopercular odontodes), no plates on the abdomen, and aside from C. platyrhynchus also lack plates on the snout edge. Different from Ancistrus by not having fleshy tentacles on the snout.

L 187 was issued to Chaetostoma pearsei from the Rio Tuy drainage. Aqualog incorrectly listed C. pearsei as coming from the Rio Orinoco. Aqualog (p. 142) included three photos of L 187 in their 2nd Ed. Photo 1 is an unknown Chaetostoma sp, photo 2 C. pearsei from Venezuela, and photo 3 is L443 which comes from Colombia. Thus L187, as presented in aqualog, represents three different spp. This identification mishap was later corrected in DATZ special edition II and the Welse Atlas Vol II.
Sexing The males have however a larger and broader head, slimmer ventral sides and disproportionately large pelvic fins. Perhaps the over-sized pelvic fins play a large role in the fertilization of the eggs. By inverting these over the clutch of eggs, they prevent the sperm cells being carried away by fast water current.
General Remarks Exported from Colombia in large numbers usually mixed in with other Chaetostoma spp. Exact collection locale unknown.

Other Parameters Despite their common availability, Chaetostoma spp. can prove difficult to maintain. Like many fishes that require higher oxygen levels they do not ship well and often arrive at the retailer in poor condition. They can also be difficult to get feeding properly after import. New acquisitions should be quarantined in a tank with the proper temperature, high oxygen levels, and offered a wide variety of frozen and live foods along with fresh vegetables until they regain their strength. Once adapted they are hardy and interesting aquarium inhabitants.
Down Husbandry Information
Feeding Live and frozen foods along with fresh vegetables. Animals that have been in captivity for some time may eventually take prepared aquarium foods. User data.
Furniture Well rounded stones stacked to replicate a river bottom and provide caves.
Compatibility Peaceful. Should not be kept with aggressive substrate dwelling fishes as they will out compete this animal for food.
Suggested Tankmates Fast water tetra spp or danios.
Breeding Unreported.
Breeding Reports There is no breeding report.
