Type Locality Rio Solimões north of Ilha da Marchantaria, about 15 km from mouth of Rio Negro at Manaus (3°15'S, 60°00'W), Amazonas, Brazil, elevation about 15 m.

Etymology Cetopsis: From the Greek cetos, meaning whale, and -opsis, meaning likeness; in reference to the whale-like appearance.
