I'm not opposed to hybrids for "animal rights concerns", but because the end result is that the pure species are lost to the hobby.
Agree 100% Mike.

Re: Pseudoplatystoma x Doradid hybrid, adult

Personally i have no time for hybrids of any species, no matter how good they look. The fact that they are hybrid is enough to put me off.

Re: Sorubim lima, damaged whiskers?

Just an update for anyone interested:
The lima's whiskers are fully grown back now. Never ended up adding any treatments to the tank, just regular 30% weekly water changes.

Re: Sorubim lima, damaged whiskers?

I had actually been treating the tank for a week, with Myxazin, as the pikes had caught some kind of fungus, possibly from moving. The cat seemed unaffected, apart from shedding its mucus after a water change. As soon as the pikes had recovered, they started attacking & nipping the cat. I actual...

Sorubim lima, damaged whiskers?

Hi all. I recently had to move my shovelnose into another tank as the two small Crenicichla atabapo pikes all of a sudden starting trying to bite the lima. They had nipped off the ends of his whiskers & tail. I know they should grow back ok, but whats concerning me is the whiskers seem to be slo...

Sid that is really interesting info, thanks. Looking at the two images in the cat-e log, Pseudoplatystoma x Sorubimichthys seems the closest match, although as Sid said, without DNA i suppose we'll never know for sure.

Thanks Shane, Viktor.
I was thinking it looked a little like TSN, but as i'm not a fan of hybrids, wasn't too sure.

Re: Shovelnose species.

Looking through the cat-elog it looks like Pseudoplatystoma sp. hybrid(3) could be a very likely candidate. If so what are the species involved?

Shovelnose species.

In my LFS they have a small 3" shovel nose. Although it looks a little like the Sorubim lima i have, there are a couple of quite pronounced differences. Firstly the tail on the small cat in the shop is very forked, it has a much broader, flatter snout & its markings are more spotted, rather...

Re: Sorubim lima question?

Hi all. Just an update & a couple of pics as promised. Good news is the Lima's pectoral fin has now totally healed, so well pleased about that. Here's a couple of pics, just to give you an idea of what my Lima looks like. Apologies for poor pics. http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu214/johnny_e...

Re: My Catfish and tanks

Wow! He's an interesting little guy, looks very active. Are these quite rare? I've not seen these before, although tbh something i'd probably just give a quick glance to & walk past if it were in my lfs.

Love the pics of the young Sorubim too.

@ firestorming. Thanks thats a good idea, if i decide to go for a glass tank. I'm currently awaiting info from an aquatics shop, that stock & sell impermax, liquid rubber. If i go for the plywood build, i will build it in the fishroom. Should just about have enough room. Thanks Bas. How i would ...

Plywood tanks.

I'm cosidering building a 7x3x2 plywood tank, rather than buying a glass one. One, because i work in the building trade & can get nearly all the ply, timber & fixings very cheap , if not for free, & two, because it would be much lighter to move. All i'd have to buy would be the glass &am...

Re: Sorubim lima question?

Cheers Viktor, i'll try & get some pics this week. I've really quite taken to this fish, it seems to be quite interactive too. Actually approaches my hand when i'm cleaning the tank. Should be quite easy to get it to hand feed, once its settled in properly. Also, i've been in the fish house this...

Re: Common garden worm for fish food?

I feed earth worms to most of my fish (cichlids & cats), great free live food. Only downside is your fish can become hooked on them if you feed them too often.

Sorubim lima question?

Hi all. I hace recently purchased a shovel nose catfish, had it around a week now. It was brought into a lfs after outgrowing its tank. It is approx 12" long & is currently housed in a 5x2x2 with a Acanthodoras cataphractus catfish. My first quaetion is, if i were to add a group of four Cre...
