Food from mother nature

Having just moved from the big city to the countryside of the Scottish Borders, I find myself at close quarters with a number of potential food sources. I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on these in general or if there were specific creatures to home in on/avoid.

I bought 3 of those Juwel sheets for a new 400l tank and at £15 a sheet they are rather expensive. In less than a month the first one had started to buckle - guess what? they don't take to being submerged in water! - within 3 months all 3 had popped up to the surface.

I guess that shows me not to ...

OK so by now either the cucumber has been eaten or gone rotten - in which case you will have removed it :wink:

If you are going to try again I think the most important thing is to make sure the cucumber is weighted so it sinks to the bottom - this is where a pleco expects to find its food & is ...

Courgette supposedly contains more nutrition than cucumber. I find that carrot is accepted quite well in the absence of anything else vegetable-wise, although it does seem that the wood-eaters find it easier. I supposed their teeth are admirably suited to someting with the texture of carrot.

After reading this thread I have started feeding courgette - I'm pretty sure this is 'British' for zuchinni ??? - but it doesn't seem to be as popular with my fish as cucumber .. maybe they just need time to appreciate it .. although this may actually be a good thing as I would never see my clown ...
