Re: Is L 173 a unique specie or hybrid ?
I don't find it now and I'm a little tired but I read somewhere where someone mentioned Hemiancistrus sabaji and the widely distribution in the Amazon area... no one so far know if this is the same specie in Guyana, French Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil, north and south of the Amazon river i...

Re: Unknown Hypancistrus sp. - Orinoco basin
This is what I call LDA19... maybe a nice variety of L340, color change with water parameters and mood (many pleco's can be white, brown or yellow of the same specie).

Re: Is L 173 a unique specie or hybrid ?
Well like I said before, zebra and inspector seems to be well differentiated, which is not the case for all the other material he had...impossible to tell appart a bunch of "species" with genetic analysis...still the colour might be different I don't know whom you talking about but is all...

Re: Is L 173 a unique specie or hybrid ?
Regarding the Hypancistrus "species" in the Rio Xingu, one thing comes into my mind, since they are genetically (mitochondrial) identical Not true, give some time and there will be some articles on this subject. Boat accident occur quite often...fishes from a different place suddenly find...

Re: Who are we? Were sold as Ancistrus sp.
L147 have striped fins ;) It does look like L124 from Colombia and not L75 from Brazil.I am quite sure that the last one is an Ancistomus cf. sabaji aka L 75 (most likely). The body is too elongated for L 147. Furthermore L 147 has some stripes on the body.

Was on my way to reply but realized that it would take to long time to give any good thoughts on this subject, what is obvious for one person is not for another, perceptions and "ideas" are turned to facts without real substance... I can just say that it's complicated. But in a perfect &qu...

Re: Hypan Sp. Garupa?
The pictures is not so good, try to take a picture with the fish in an aquarium.
I have never seen a H. sp "Garupa" and for me they not exist, your fish look like a small L66 but it's always difficult to id small size of Hypancistrus species.

Re: How to solve ichthyophthirius multifiliis in L-numbers
Salt is always a good in combination with Metronidazol but not against Ich that not are a bacteria. Malachite green in correct dosages is not harmful to the genus loricariidae, it's toxic but that is almost all medications if over dosage... even pure water are toxic in enough amount (for mammals and...

Re: Sudden Hypancistrus deaths
Interesting. I don't think it's lack of oxygen as I keep my tanks pretty well aerated and I don't think deaths would follow the churning that would occur from a water change if that was the problem, furthermore I have bubblers and powerheads on my tanks (and these fish have all bred, which I assume...

Re: Sudden Hypancistrus deaths
I doubt that this is a water chemistry problem because these deaths follow water changes. Why not? it depends on the water paramaters before and how long time they was exposed to "bad water", a large water change not always save the fish and sometimes it can even have the opposite affect ...

Re: Lower Rio Xingus ???
I have wondered about the aftermath of the construction of the Tucurui dam on the Rio Tocantins. It is probably the best example of what the effects of construction and long term operation of the dam has on an Amazon tributary's wild life. Yes in one way it's, we still know there are fish living in...

Sorry, but the effect was: - before the ban - every fish was on sale - even Hypancistrus zebra. So I know all the lists, but the effect was … - after the ban - controll of exporters. The white list was enforced. You could name it like you want. I call it a ban, because that was the effect. Ok, I ta...

Given all of the above plus many other things not mentioned, I think it will take an absolute miracle for most of the fish in that region to have even a remote chance of survival. If I was in charge of IBAMA I would want get as many fish out of the river as possible before they are killed off. I re...

Re: Lower Rio Xingus ???
thank you. So this means: There will be L 333 before the ban. And L 333 after the ban, wich is L 401 before of the ban. It seems to get really confusing. Do we will get also L 400, L 287, L 173 (before the ban) as L 66 after the ban? This is quite irritating that people always think species have be...

Re: Lower Rio Xingus ???
Could you please tell us, what this mistake is about. Do you have any Idea, why they will identify the fish. Usually ist very difficult to separate the wormlined Hypancistrus. And the pattern is - as we all know - not the best idea to do this. Just short, all fish that are allowed for export but no...

Plecoboy,

I think the Centromochlus not are in the Cat-eLog and I don't find it on fishbase either. C. existimatus from Manaus area is around 1300km from Belem where this one was caught and it's plenty of them, don't match either both on appearance and locality. Since it's very common and occur in a place whe...

This is a crossbreed between L173 and H. zebra. Please see picture attached of a nice L400 variant foun...

The last 2 pictures show in the first pic L173 and the second pic H. zebra or maybe a hybrid between L173 and H. zebra? In any case, these are not the same species.

Yes, keep them separate and they will grow up to one of the most beautiful Hypancistrus species you have had... in my eyes they are more beautiful than H. zebra and they will be really black and white as adults.

Haakon, Yes, there are a mimic species living together with L174 in Xingu, your seconed picture in the first post is for sure the mimic but the first pic is taken in a bad angle so I will not say it's the mimic. In your second post from the Japanese page and first pic is also the mimic but the other...

This is the same potentially newly added fish to the positive list as last year. when it was going to happen right away. Well 11 months later and still nothing, IBAMA works in umber slow motion. I won't believe any of this until it actually happens, which could be another 3 years knowing IBAMA. It ...
