Spawning Season in Full Swing

Post by Coryologist »

Greetings. The onset of the cooler weather has brought on a good spurt of spawning in my fish room. In the past week, or so, I have had spawns of:

C. weitzmani, C. duplicareus, C. ehrhardti (1st time), C. sarareensis, C. similis, C. araguaiaensis, C. venezuelanus and S. barbatus.

Frank

P. S. Ater posting, I went into the fish room and found eggs from C. nattereri.

Frank,
Nicely done! At what age(or size) did your S.barbatus begin spawning? I have 6 sub-adults, 3 male, 3 female, appx. 9 months of age, growing like stinkweed!
Thanks,
Amanda

Hi Amanda TYVM. :-) I have no idea of the age of this group as they were mature adults when I obtained them. I have had them 3 or 4 years and they started spawning for me about 2 years ago. They are huge fish. My experience with most Corydoras species is that they start spawning at 12 to 15 months. I do not know if that holds true for Scleromystax. Perhaps someone with a bit more experience with them will chime in to help you. Be well. - Frank

Isn't a shame that these wild Corys are such seasonal spawners? Congratulations on the flurry of action. Perhaps eventually Corydoras weitzmanni will become as available as C. sterbai and C. panda. I just received Corydoras' erhardti and duplicarious. The erhardti are possibly old enough to participate in the season. The duplicarious came in poor shape but 8/12 survivors are finally gaining their body mass and just maybe can be brought into condition in time but I suspect it will be next season before they are truly restored to peak condition.
Make as many Corydoras weitzmanni as you can. We have to make this one a standard stock item around the world. The current prices for wild fish are surreal.

Thank you, Frank. I like the way you frame your photos. I have an empty 55 gallon tank and I just need to get the filter and substrate. Since they're growing faster than expected, I had better get moving. Good point, Larry.
