Post by indie »

hi im new.
i adore plecos and have in my tank currently a starlight bristlenose, royal pleco and a gold nugget.

they all seem to hide out at the back of the tank, not touching the algae.
are there any plecos that are good algae eaters?

check your tank for there's something very wrong with the fish, the water, anything else.
the Royal Plec (Panaque nigrolineatus) should scrape 24/7; and especially at night you should be able to hear it trying to chew through backpanels, wood, tankfurniture....

The Goldnugget is also a fairly good chewer; it's not as distructive as a Panaque, but it can and does change most plants into something more resembling a sieve. especially softleafed plants. Goldnuggets like algae just fine.

the Bristlenose should clear out ANY algae, because as pleco's come; Ancistrus-species are THE champions of the algae-eating species.
If the Ancistrus doesn't touch the algae, something's wrong with the fish (sick? stressed?), the water (wrong parameters? no wood? disease?) or the lgae (blue greens instead of green algae?)
