Oponions on keeping Betta and Corydora catfish together?

Post by miranda »

I'm thinking about getting fish soon and wanted to get a male Betta. I would like very much to get some other fish in the tank as well so it won't be one fish swimming around in a small container. I had read that Cory cats do well with Bettas because they are hardy and peaceful and won't cause fights or bite at the Betta's fins. I was wondering what anyone here's opinion would be about keeping a male betta and maybe about 3-5 albino or bronze corys together in the same tank, and also, since i read that cory's get to be about 3 inches long, what would be a good size tank? 15, 20 gal maybe? Thank you for any input anyone can offer. :)

Corys and Bettas go well together in my opinion. Bettas have a relatively wide range of temperature, but you'll have to check with the individual species of Corydoras to make sure they are all OK with the same temperatures, as Bettas tend to prefer a slightly higher temperature. Fishbase lists 24-30'C (approx 75-85'C). I did a search for Corydoras that are happy with 26-27'C, and here's the link for that search:

You can select a different temperature range by going Here.

Another option that is open to you, if you select a slightly bigger tank (20g would be fine) is . It's not a "proper" Corydoras, but that's just a technicality that us fish-geeks make a point of. For all fishkeeping purposes, you can treat it as the same. [The difference is that it's got more rays in the dorsal fin for example, which makes it a "different genus"]. They grow slightly larger than the regular corydoras, but they do grow fairly slowly.

15-20 gallon is fine for Corys and the Betta splendens is fine in that sort of tank too.

My wife has a 7 gallon "cube" that has a pair of Betta's (male + female), one juvenile and a good half-dozen Neon Tetras. [The ancistrus is constantly swapped to a "smaller one" to keep it from outgrowing the tank - as I have almost unlimited supply of "babies" - but if you go for a 20g tank, I'd definitely recommend at least one Ancistrus to keep the algae at bay.].
