I.D but no pics sorry.

Hi guys, this is gonna take some explaining. I seen this fish and asked what it was and they told me a Goby of some sort. It is about 3.5-4" and has the same coloured body as a marbled Raphael but has the same kind of mouth as a Frogmouth Catfish. It also has a large very rounded tail almost like a full circle. It has no bels on its head at all and has what looks like 2 dorsal fins almost right next to each other. I was told by the shop keeper it would grow to about 8", but as he didn't know what it was I took no notice. It also has 2 fins on its underneath which it kind of walks on, but not walking obviously. It is a light baige colour mixed in with dark brown markings, almost like camouflage. Sorry for the Vaignace but my damn camera is broken.

Anyway, I know you shouldn't buy fish you don't know but I had a spare 20gal he is in on his own for now and I am currently cycling my 90gal which he can live in as long as he doesn't turn out to be a monster, which by the I have made previsions for. One of my LFS is good at taking problem fish like that and finding them people with extremely large tanks so I can take it there.

I am still looking on the net for it myself but I'm struggling so if it sounds familiar to anyone could they please help.

I bought it more for the poor platies sake they had him homed with, one already had have his bodie torn off. Anyway thx in advance for any help.

It's probably some kind of Oxyeleotris. Google for that or the old name: Eleotris. Or have a look overhere:

Thx for ur reply, I just found it on another site, it's a Marbled goby after all that. Can't find info on it anywhere though.

Have you got a Latin name pls; I don't know what a marbled Goby is....

Man you know your stuff, it was the first link I got under that search on google. Apparently a Marbled Goby is under that family.

Oxyeleotris marmorata is the name that this link says.

In that case you own a magnificent fish. But it can grow to a stunning 20" and it has an unprecedented appetite.
Enjoy this one. It's been ages since I last saw one and ever longer since I last kept one. Being pretty fresh in those days, I wondered why all my community fishes disappeared.... Guess what

Haha yeah I figured it would be quite big, do you think it would be ok in this list?

1xConvict
1xFiremouth

and a couple of other similar sized fish. I wasn't sure if it will eat these once he's bigger. Got him for £5 aswell, thought that might be value.

Sorry it is for a 90gal 4'x2'x1.5'. Also do you know how hardy they are as it is cycling now but I want to get him out incase he eats the 3" shark in there with him. Thx

These fish are pretty hardy; I wouldn't expect any problems. Five GBP is indeed a fair price.
The fishes in your list are safe for the time being. I don't think he'll go after the silver dollars at all because of their shape (they don't fit), but when he's grown he might try the cichlids at night. They sleep practically on the sand, while he's wide awake and hunting for food.....

There are similar fish in Australia, we call them Gudgeons, though I think they are different to European Gudgeons. Your marbled fish is similar to one we call a Sleepy Cod, Oxyeleotris lineolata, an interesting fish to keep but, as Marc says, they have a big mouth and an appetite to match!
