zungaro zungaro synonym error maybe?

Post by Kenneth Wong »

I was looking at the synonyms for zungaro zungaro and was wondering if the name Brachyplatystoma flavicans should not be there. I thought Brachyplatystoma flavicans was the previous name for Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii or am I confused/wrong.

Hi Kenneth,
The problem with Zungaro zungaro is that almost everyone thinks it's a large type of bumble bee cat. And yes, some larger Pseudopimelodids were "known" in literature as such.
However, Zungaro is a typical large Pimelodid, like (indeed) Brachyplatystoma and Phractocephalus. Perhaps that perception caused your confusion.
Anyway, the synonym is correct.
And to answer your other question, B. flavicans is no synonym for B. rousseauxii.

The reason for my confusion is, when I refer back to the older books, ie An Atlas of Freshwater and Marine Catfishes, they describe and show a picture of the B. Flavicans which resembles (golden body and identical shape) the B. rousseauxii.

Thanks

Kenneth

Even the "New Testament" on catfishes has its mistakes.
