Oscar companion

Post by eyeballkid »

Hi All,

I am just about to set up a 90 gallon aquarium for an Oscar. Does anyone have any advice on a catfish to have alongside it? I love the look of the red tail, but understand they get a bit monstrous - is there a similar looking catfish, readily available in the UK that gets to about 6 inches?

Thanks

Here's a list of fishes that grow to around 6 inches (120-180mm, which is around 5 to 7 inches roughly - I'm from Sweden, so I prefer to work in metric, but the search tool allows you to enter either, really).

List.

The list is sorted by "hits", so the most popular ones are at the top of the list. [That's the first 100 species that grow to this size - I used some behind the scenes tricks, and came up with 290 species in total that match this size.

Unfortunately, there's no "looks like" search in the list, so you'll have to look through it by hand to determine whether you like them or not (there really is no small catfish that looks like a South American Red-tail Catfish. If there was, I'd have one... ;-) )

Here's a list of "pimelodidae" by same size criteria as above. It only lists four species, of which P. pictus is the only one to be easily available - others can be had, but are less common.

If you go to the Search page, you can build your own searches. You can for example add the intended temperature of your Oscar tank and sort away fish that don't like that temperature (and note that the closer the temperature, the bigger the selection will be, as the list is ONLY of fish that wholly reside INSIDE the temperature range, not ones that are touching the temperature range - if you enter 15-30'C, you'll get NO fish at all, but 25-26'C will list quite a few).
