CLOG Tags for Families?

Title says it all really.

As they can be used for both species and genera, is is worthwhile to make them work for families?

Not essential, just saves a wee bit of time when linking to families.

The clog tag automatically italicizes the terms within, and as family names are not italicized, a new tag would have to be created at the family level.

If jools could send me the code from phpBB that does the CLOG tags, I'll see if I can add "family" or something... [the name "flog" could be misunderstood, I think].

We also would need a piece of code similar to:
scripts/clog_link.php (which I can pretty much guess what it looks like - but I haven't got that code either)

This part is not hard to write (compared to the work on "ocurrences" that me and Jools have been doing the last few weeks, at least).

Of course, ultimately, Jools is the one that decides what and how we develop the site - he may prefer not to spend time on this and do something "better".

It's not a bad idea at all and Silurus makes a good point about italicization.

No rush as I know you've been ill. Did you get the code for this from me or not - I can't remember if I sent it.

Anyway, I propose to add this and then fix the italics issue thereafter?

As I've looked into this recently with what has now become an improvement on the [ cimg ] concept, I'm fairly well up to speed on what is required for a family one.

The "image" on that seems a bit confused, but otherwise fine.

And of course, you'd need to add the "Don't italicize" bit of code - but I think that's just a copy'n'paste from the bit that does that in other places, right?

OK, that works, however,

a) It's in italics and
b) it tries to generate an invalid mouseover image

It will need it's own tag if these issues are to be overcome?

Any suggestions?

Nope, it would be a super-ugly regular expression that says add italics if the tag contents contains a space.

A new tag is a much easier option, but still tricky.

I'm not a fan of super-ugly regular expressions!

And just looking for a space wouldn't work for something like , right?

Unfortunately, I don't know what the code looks like o add the clog tags - is it just a regular expression at the moment saying "take whatever is within the tag and apply to the link-script"?

Right, I hadn't though of that, so I'd need to use the database to hit the genus or family table to work out what we are displaying - that's possible, I had to do something similar to get the family info for species clog uses.

That still leaves the italics problem, we need a new tag.

Hmmm.

I can't think of any easy solution to just use the regular expression method that is in the current bbcode.php.

I honestly think the best way is to add a hack to bbcode to call a function with the contents between the tags and let that function sort out what it "translates to".
