Synodontis njassae
Synodontis njassae
Hi
I have a question about the synodontis njassae.
Does this one in nature itself live in a group or is it a fish that lives alone there?
I hope anyone can give me the answer to this question.
Greetings netnie

it's a true shoaling fish and any group should be at least 5 or 6 fish.
given the fact that it's a very active fish with a length ranging from at least 6" but easily reaching near 8", you'll see you need a fairly large tank.
unfortunately the last decade or so S njassae is extremely rare in the trade; almost all (>99%) fish in the trade sold as the njassae are hybrid species "made" in Czechia, no real Synodontis njassae.

Hi
Thank you for your answer.
In a country near by the country I live they have wild catch synodontis njassae (I live in holland by the way) and then I will buy at least 5 of them.
They are the real deal
I am aware of all those hybrids, here in Holland they sell a lot of those, I've seen them, it's a shame.
The large tank is no problem, first they will go in quarantaine for a month or 2, and then they will go in a 1500 liter watertank
With kind regards Cindy (alias Netnie)

Hi
Yeah I saw from the text written by your username your dutch too.
I went on advice from Catharina from Verduijn Cichlids to a fish store called Abysse in Paris.
Here is the link from that store.
http://www.abysse-cichlides.com
At the stocklist you can also see a picture of them.
I have 5 of them swimming in my tank now

I wouldn't call Paris "near" the Netherlands by any stretch (Belgium is in the way), but it doesn't surprise me that a French importer managed to get the real thing.
the French have strong connections in east Africa, not in the least thanks to Pierre and Michelle Brichards' groundbreaking work on the Riftlakes.
and they're true njassae's too; nice pix on their stocklist.
good thing you thought about buying a group. most people would have bought just 2 or 3.
ps, just checked the price...an absolute bargain!

I think this is a good time to remind you, Cindy, that it's part of the Forum rules to have a location in your profile (top right on the page). It's helpful to everyone to have an idea of where you're located, as shop recommendations, medications, and various other matters will depend a little bit on where you're located. [It's enough to fill in the country if you're Dutch]Netnie wrote:Yeah I saw from the text written by your username your dutch too.

Hi
I live in Tilburg and it took me 4 hours to get to the store in Paris.
And indeed, the price is good.
All the fish in that store looked very healthy by the way, and the tanks where clean and the store also.
The owner Eric was a very nice person also, a real fish lover he was.
I'm glad you told me I need a group of those njassae's.
I want my fish to feel good in my fishtank.
And also I don't want to be told with the contests my fishtank are part of that I made a mistake by having not enough njassae's.
When they are out of quarantaine they will swim between 3 sorts of malawi cichlids.
Then, the population I wanted is complete, so I think they will live a good life here.

I live in the very same city.....
4 hrs drive to Paris??
how the hell did you manage to get past Belgium so fast....i just went there to pick up invertebrates and IMO it's "road hell", took me more than 1 hr to go to a plce just over 50km away due to that mess.
amazing.
can you pm me the store?
and btw is it Eric as in Eric Genevelle, the Tanganyikan enthousiast that has the biggest site on Tangs to date; http://tanganyika-cichlids.com/copyrigh.htm
it's the only COMPLETE site, wich covers anything from plants and invertebrates to catfishes, reptiles, mammals, characins and even the protozoa that dwell in the lake.
I've spotted something else as well on his stocklist; he has the "Giant" petricola from Tanzania!

Kigoma petricola's mixed with synodontis grandiops/multipunctatus.
I'm very much tempted to take a shot at these myself. next to granny's the most beautiful Syno from Tang. and unlike lucipinnis and Burundi petricola's these don't turn dark when getting older; for reasons unknown to me they stay contrast-rich on fins and body!

Hey Hey
Funny that we live in the same city.
We drove via Antwerpen, Gent, Kortrijk, Lille, to Paris.
One tip if you want to drive to Paris: have a navigation at your side, we didn't and said at the end: never again without navigation.
driving to Paris was easy, but in paris.
Paris has very heavy traffic and because of that you have to look and think and act so fast, it's crazy.
A navigation to take over some of that work would have been very welkom that day.
But a print-out from http://www.routenet.nl and 2 times help from someone on the streets there, brought us where we wanted to be.
The adres is:
60 avenue Roger Salengro
94500
Champigny sur Marne
And the owner is Eric Zeiton.
