Sturisoma panamense?

Post by Bristle nose »

I bought a Whiptail under the name of 'Sturisoma panamense', but while looking in the Cat-elog under Sturisoma panamense i read this: Another elegant species confused with S. festivum (and thus S. aureum). This species can be distinguished by the fins which, while spectacular, do not have the trailing extensions of S. festivum.

Mine does have the tail extensions, so would this mean that it is not Sturisoma panamense, but instead Sturisoma festivum?

Here are some photos of it - Image

Just plecofanatics banners. I even logged out and back in. The links just lead to giant PF banners. Maybe Jeff put up some sort of block at PF?
I even logged in at PF, went to "galleries," then "bristlenose." I can see the thumbs, but clicking on the pics just brings up the PF banner again.

I can see the photos using IE.
Looks like I have S. panemense instead of S. nigirostrum. I have six and all have long tail extensions. In fact, one has them that are close to 2 inches long but they are otherwise identical.

Hello,

If you will have a look on the description of the species S.panamense, you will see that especally the dorsal fin of this species is larger than the type of your fotos show. Also the coloration of S.panamense differs to yours.
The shape and size of the dorsal fin, as well as the coloration is identical to S.festivum.

best regards
Norman
