I don't understand spam for medicines..

Post by MatsP »

It seems that if that many of the people who advertise medications available on the internet aren't really caring for their health.

I've just looked at a few of the latest "new users" that have as "interest" the name of a medication.

When I looked up what the medication is for, it's something like a cough medication or to help with kidney problems. Ok, so that's a good thing for people, right? But some further digging shows that the most likely candidate customers aren't "ill people who want to save money", but rather people who want to use these medicines for purposes other than what they are normally prescribed by doctors. Such as cough medication that is used to get "drunk" or "stoned".... Or using a "diuretic" to loose weight (which in the best of times causes a pretty short-lived loss of weight in the first place).

Of course, the ones spamming this forum may not even have a legitimate business at all, but rather takes unsuspecting peoples credit card, charges it for $nnnn and "disappears".

Just don't really get it... Are there actually people who are stupid enough to do this?

I guess so. Why would anyone bother to select these things for SPAM otherwise?

Mats,
In the Old American West, they used to call them Snake Oil Salesmen. They bottled up common liquids(some did nothing, but others were downright poisonous) and made outrageous claims of "miracle cures". Sound familiar?

All these spammers are not real people. They are programmable bots that scan and attack forums or boards.

It is not easy to get rid of them completely as they always find new ways of attacking a site.

Being a site admin is definitely NOT an easy job....

cheers Jools!

Really? How do they get past the anti spam code on the registration code that I put in last week (note: NOT, the visual confirmation).

Haven't these "drug or porn" spammers just registered manually for a one shot inappropriate post then they are gone?

Yes, that is my understanding, the new anti spam code should prove that.

If robots were getting in, how would you explain so few posts...

It's all about page rank stats primarily provided from fields (web site, email address) that I have now removed from the members list page. Also you have to have posted 3 times or more to appear on that page now too.

They have sunk to a new low.... I noticed several comments had been added to my photo pages at dignall.com. You guessed it... they are all spam for drugs. Who has time to spam as comments on a photo in a gallary page?

Yes, the comment spam is becoming very common on any sites that have the option...myspace and similar networking/profile sites. I'm guessing the members get paid for adding their product related spiels?
Someone did it to my little sister (ok she's 19...) with disgusting posts for some pretty disgusting products. She deleted the comments and I imformed him of what would happen if the same or similar was posted again...since he had his photo, location and favourite hang-out places listed in his profile
The internet is getting lousy with this kind of stuff now.
