I think the point is more that your picture shows a fish that isn't CLEARLY sexable. I would hazzard a guess of male. But that's not a certainty. Going by the pectoral fins and cheek odontodes, it would be a male - but I don't know these fish well enough to know if the females also have a bit of odontal growth in those places.
