Fellow Keeper In Need Of A Little Help... The free kind
A friend on another forum just went through the breakup of a LTR. She had to sell most of her fish as a result. She's trying to get back into the hobby, but her money is tight. The help she needs is easy and free.
She entered a picture of her ABN in an online photo contest. Top prize is a $250 gift certificate to her favorite LFS. Currently she is in second place. And in reality that's good enough. The top 20 go to a 3 judge panel to determine the winners. But here's the rub. The pic in first place looks like it was taken with an Instamatic from across the room. Obviously some other online community is pumping it up. So what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
Link is below. Check out the Damsel in first. Terrible picture. That just can't stand. And I think she may have a better chance with the judges if she wins it outright. So how about a little PC love? You can vote 3 times every 25 hours. I'm sure she would appreciate any support you can give. You can mix your votes, I ask that you give her at least one. I've been giving her 6 a day, 3 a day from both home and work.

A lot of great, and not so great pictures. At very least it's a fun link. The 17 year old Clown Loach is worth checking out. Not a great picture, but one hell of a fish.

Your friend seems to have plenty of help!! She's second and gaining on #1. Loaches online is campaigning for the 17-year old clown loach, so it's doing OK. I think the ones that are doing well are generally voted on by groups with a motive other than getting the best picture (there are lots of great shots to vote for) but the ABN is worth a vote (or three as is the daily maximum) - it's a good shot.

You're right. When she asked for help she was in third place behind the damsel and the bi color betta. At that time the rules were the pic with the most votes wins a $250 gift certificate to their favorite LFS and gets published in TFH. Simple enough. Except the two leaders were obviously being propped up by some on-line community. The pictures are terrible and not worthy of publication. So the sponsors changed the rules and added the 3 judge panel to pick from the top 20 in votes.
So when this started it was for the purpose of helping our friend and displacing the two in front of her. A 'win win'. Now, I admit, it has become a quest to overtake that horrible damsel pic. Her ABN is the only good pic with a chance to do so. Personally, I think the judges will pick the Threadfin or Lionfish to win.

I agree. Have from the start.
But the ABN is in first place now, and pulling away from the damsel. Thanks any and all that threw a few votes her way.

I'm not the only one soliciting help in a forum. I just multitask better.

For those that have not checked in lately the ABN is in first and pulling away from the field. Thanks again for any and all support. Voting will end (IIRC) 1-12-08.

To the mod who moved this thread, thank you.
I debated where would be best. Tank Talk because it was about tank pics, or the Speak Easy because it was asking for some off beat type of help. I decided on the Speak Easy then posted in the wrong forum anyway. I figured it would be (re)moved.

Re: Fellow Keeper In Need Of A Little Help... The free kind
One day left and the ABN is still in first. By about a grand right now. But a pic is making an astonishing run. The Clarkii & Anemone pic is now in second and gaining. It seems to be getting three votes every couple of minutes. I smell a rat and this time it's not me!
Can I ask one more time for everyone to pour it on for the pleco?

The judges have finally spoken and the ABN did not place in the top four. But we tried. Thanks for the support.

You've got two out of three right. Not bad. Nor was the ABN picture. And at least the damsel didn't win. That would have been a real shame.Fish Soup wrote:Personally, I think the judges will pick the Threadfin or Lionfish to win.

Re: Fellow Keeper In Need Of A Little Help... The free kind
Something I find amusing. Someone posted two different pics of his clarkii clownfish. One got some major backing and came from down 2,000 to within 49 of winning the vote count in four days. But the other pic scored with the judges and took fourth in the money round. That guy made me work my fingers to the bones and he backed the wrong picture!
We took a poll on WWP to get opinions of how we would judge. Two rules. We couldn't vote for the ABN or the Threadfins. The ABN so none would feel obligated to lie since Mindy is a member and the Threadfins because the colors seem doctored. My final picks were Bob the lionfish, the Opaque Betta Splendens, and the macro shot of the Crystal Red Shrimp. So I got first place, but just the one.
I think giving the Threadfins third was a cop out by the judges. It's either real and the clear winner, or doctored and disqualified. The problem was there was no rule against using a doctored pic! Something I bet they fix for the next contest.
