Yes, it is still broken. It's one of those ones where whe you fix one thing, it breaks another, you fix the second thing and a third breaks, you fix the third and it breaks the first and off we go again. The thing is so complex it really now needs a re-write and in fact might even benefit from being integrated with the forum. Are you still interesting in doing development work for the site, if so, I could break this project down into manageable chunks and get it fixed once and for all.

Edit: That is two single ' instead of a single " character - you can see the difference when writing the post, but when it is posted, the typeface doesn't show (much) of a difference.

In the near future browsers will also automatically identify co-ords and a simple click will whizz your browser off to that part of the world. So, as you say, it is good data to have. Almost merits its own data field...

I've been thinking that for a while now, and we could then [without relying on browser automagics] add a "show map of type location", similar to our BOFW maps.

And we could probably automate a population of this field:
if type location contains degree sign, then strip out the degree values (and adjust sign based on N/S, E/W at the end). Need to understand D°M'S.f'' (including fractions in seconds), D°M.f and D.f° where ".f" means "fractions of this unit. Also needs to understand both double single quotes and single double quote for second marks.

Right, I've added a one-liner to the vet.php that is used by Jools to add new data to the Cat-eLog pages. I have tested it on my local version of planet catfish.

Enter something in type location that contains both single and double quotes. If correct, it should appear in the vetting box for type lcation, looking the same, but the double-quotes are two single quotes (so you can place the cursor between the two quotes).

I have submitted an update to M. nasutus, as per above.

now has a little "map-icon" and shows a map of the coordinates from the type location.

I'm moving this to resolved, but will check on new updates to see if they are OK.

Yes, I see that. If you use the mouse-wheel to zoom, you'll find that it's in the Indian ocean, which is where you get to if the 67d 23m W is taken as the same distance EAST.

I need to look at that, since it should work right - it may be more problems with multibyte characters that made me add +1 to the $pos for finding S/W and invert.

I will also add an output of type_loc_lat/type_loc_long somewhere on the page, so that it's easier to verify where it actually ended up, and a map on the vet-page, perhaps?

The vet page probably should have two maps, one showing more or less "world" view, and one showing the local area.

Revision 482 contains a fix for the problems recognising the South/West directions of degrees in type location.

Vetting also shows a map so it's more likely to discover when the coordinates are wrong...
