Please help ID my Pleco

Post by J.B. »

I picked this one up today and it was labeled "Common" Plecostomus. I don't believe it is and that is why I grabbed it. I've looked through all the pics here, and can't seem to find a match, so any help would be greatly appreciated. He has what appears to be 7 rays on the dorsal if that helps any.

Looks like a "Common" of the Hypostomus variety.

Yes, I'd say it's a Hypostomus too - but the pictures are not 100% clear, a photo of the mouth would help. It's clearly not a "Common Common" Pterygoplichthys species, as they have more dorsal rays.

It finally came out of hiding and I was able to get this pic of it's mouth. If you need one from the bottom, let me know and I see if I can get one snapped next time it's out and about. Thanks for your help with this.

The pic of the mouth Mats asked about needs to be a picture of the mouth from the bottom so that the dentition (teeth) can be seen. Something like this:

Yeah, after I posted that pic I looked around through the other "Help ID my pleco" posts and figured that out. He/she is in a fairly densely planted tank and doesn't come to the front that often, so as soon as I catch it up there, I'll see if I can snap a pic. Thanks for ya'lls help.
