Regarding Hara Jerdoni

Post by uknowho »

Hi,

First post here. I am not sure if I am feeding my mini catfish properly.

1) How do I know if they are eating well?
2) What kind of food is ideal for them?

A separate question
1) Are they social .. requiring company of their own kind? If so, do I go with the standard number of schooling fish ie, minimum 6?

Thanks. :)

There is quite a bit of discussion in this thread:

Hey,

they like company of they own very much. Males sometimes fight with eachother. But fear not fights are totally not harmfull.

Best food for them are all kinds of worms you may get small enough to be swallowed by tiny catfish. Bloodworms, whiteworms, mosquite larvaes, chopped tubifex. They don't eat flakes at all.

Watch them few minutes after feeding you will see if they eat or not. Eventually look at their bellies.

Regards.

Thanks, worton. Does it have to be live food? Frozen or Freeze dried works?

In this case, "prepared food" would be frozen food, for example. The above text seems to imply that they would also eat dried food, but Worton seems to say "not flakes". I don't know if they will take for example Tetra Bits (a.k.a Tetra prima, Tetra Discus).

I tried feeding crushed flakes and shrimp pellets as well as algae wafers. Will have to see if I can get some other food as their stomach seems hollow at the moment.

Thanks.

Bear in mind that newly acquired fish can be hard to get to eat simply because they are stressed from the act of being moved.

Thos are awesome pics! I have come here to learn about my Hara Jerdoni as well. I purchased two, but sadly one did not make it through the stress of the shipment. The heating pad went cold. :( I have purchased a Grindal worm culture, you may want to look into it. Unlike blackworms, these are very easy to care for. My culture is multiplying, and I am soon going to separate it so I have two going.{should something happen to one} I was told to look into raising daphnia for them. That is my next research project. My Axelrod's rasboras, kuhli loaches, and corydoras habrosus also are loving the grindals. 8)

Enchytraeus buchholzi.

I bought mine from a hobbyist, for about $6.00 U.S. He told me to keep them in coconut fiber, that's what he uses. I have been feeding them ground fish food, and cricket gutload{very fine powdered mix of various nutritious stuff} You will notice some people just use simply oatmeal, or cereal to feed the worms. To me, this is inadequate..as I truly believe if you gutload feeders with a variety, this translates to healthier fish in the end result. It is important to keep an inner lid over the culture, making pinholes in the actual lid for air. The inner lid is a place to put the food, and helps to keep out unwanted pests.{other bugs} HTH :)
