Need to know what Scientific name to tell my LFS I want

Post by cebbsk »

Hi- I am interested in a Bristlenose Catfish but don't know what Ancistrus sp. to tell them. I want one that will not get bigger than 4 or 5 inches. They have what they are calling a Bushy Nose Pleco. How big do these get? (they thought big) They said if I have a correct scientific name they can order for me.
Any input is appreciated!

Hm... I'm not sure, but I think the bushy nose is Ancistrus ranunculus and it grows to apx. 20 cm.

Actually, A. ranunculus is known as the medusa pleco. The bushynose would be what is commonly called A. temminckii in the aquarium trade.

20 cm = about 7" and that is too big. What is an Ancistrus I can tell them that will be closer to 4"?

thanks

You can tell your LFS to order Ancistus temminckii (they're not really A. temminckii, but the story is complicated). They'll reach to 4" or so.

HH: Is the story too long for writing it here? I'd be happy to hear (well, read it anyway) it :)

BTW, I think you should try ordering Ancistrus dolichopterus, wich seems to be the most commonly used name for the fish HH mentioned.

Thank you both. I will take them both names and see what they say! LOL
