A spawning from C. Schulzei
Hello,
This morning I was pleasantly surprised to see that my C. Schulzei were actively spawning in there fish tank.
Since this is my first time attempt I don't really know what to do. I've read a lot of your topics on how to raise and keep fry but still, when it suddenly happens I'm a bit lost.
What is the best way to go about this? Would someone like to help me please??
Thanks!!! Jacqueline

Re: A spawning from C. Schulzei
Hello,
As I go along more questions rise.
Do I have to remove the white eggs? Or is it better to leave everything alone?
I still have them in a net in the adults tank. When should I move them to a little tank for themselves? Before or after the have come out of there eggs?
Hope someone will give me a little advise......

Re: A spawning from C. Schulzei
well jac, i can give some words of thought, but i know there are far more experienced people on this forum!
i usually take the eggs off the glass en plants, carefully rolling alongst them with your finger, they will stick to your finger. place them in a guppy breeding tank or breeding net. always remove fungussed (spelling?) eggs or the will fungus the rest of the eggs too.
i would keep the fry in the same tank as the adults, in the guppy breeding tank or breeding net ofcourse
put them in the tank with the adults when they reach a size which is big enough for them not to be eaten by any other fish in this tank.
let's hope you get more advice, cause i have the feeling my advice isn't the greatest on this matter
good luck jac!

Re: A spawning from C. Schulzei
Hi,
Thanks a lot for your advise. I did remove the white eggs but I found it difficult because they stick together so much.
I have to say.....I tested the water conditions of the adults tank and I'm sorry to say......it had a lot of NO2 in it
So my hopes of this spawning flew out of the window after I saw that result...... I did change the water but still, I think the damage has already bin done.
I hope, if this attempt doesn't work out, they will give me another chance and spawn again.
Learning along the way
Bye, Jacqueline

Re: A spawning from C. Schulzei
a lot of no2 you say, what was the exact parameter?
i find it hard to believe any corydoras species would breed in a condition where there's nitrite in the water. especially cause you say 'a lot of no2', the smallest bit of no2 can kill your fish in no time! it really is like poison to them.
maybe your testkit is expired? or something else went wrong?
could be you have a bacterial problem. i recommend using BioDigest to upgrade your bacteria

Re: A spawning from C. Schulzei
Hi,
I only had these corydoras species for 2 weeks. The tank had a NO2 piek (new filter). The fish never suffered because I changed there water every day for at least 50%.
Then one day they just started spawning. The water showed a bit white so I tested it and saw that it contained a lot of NO2, the tested water showed red.......so that means a lot.......
Today I put them in a bigger tank of 60 liters (before it was 45 liters) with water from my discus tank and some fresh water and a stronger pomp. I've started all over with them. I'll keep on changing the water until it stays good.
I've still got the eggs but it doesn't look good

I use the method dutchfry recommended for small numbers from unplanned Corydoras spawns.
Hope they resume spawning once you fix your water problem.

Re: A spawning from C. Schulzei
Hi there
Today I became the proud owner of little baby fry from the C. Schulzei. The eggs are hatching
I've seen about 10 baby's and still about a 100 to go.
This morning I changed 50% off the water and this afternoon I did the same thing again. They also have an air stone in there little hatching tank. The temperature has risen because of the fine weather we have at the moment, 25 celcius.
The fry is very very small. Is this a problem? I think they are no bigger than 2 mm with there little tail. Is this also because of the quick hatching? I've started a culture of micro worms for them, to hopefully feed in about a weeks time. Before that I wanted to give them Liquifry. Is this ok?
Here are some pictures of the adults and the eggs on the day I found them
I'll take some pictures tomorrow of the fry.

Thanks very much so far

Hello,
Nearly all of the eggs have hatched and the fry are doing fine
I think there are about 150 of them
I'm very exited and hope they will keep doing fine.
Today I've put them in a bigger tank with some sand, an airfilter and an airstone.
From tomorrow I'll start feeding them with Liquifry and liquid artemia.
Here is a picture of my little stars

Bye, Jacqueline

Re: A spawning from C. Schulzei
Hi,
Then rain accompanied together with low air pressure, water temperature drop and improving water conditions is the trigger for spawning.
But as for the fry you should try to have optimum water condition (no nitrite). Especially if you don't have any substrate like sand you will quite often have problems with bacteria at the glass or plastic surface. Low pH values reduce this risk, for instance you can add ?cones? of alder trees. Furthermore, I usually put a lot of snails or sometims very small bristlenose catfish to let them eat the leftover food.
Good luck.
Bye,
Karsten
well that's not quite correct, sometimes it's exactly the condition that you can find at the end of the dry season. Low water level, bad water quality because of lots of fish starving...i find it hard to believe any corydoras species would breed in a condition where there's nitrite in the water.

Re: A spawning from C. Schulzei
Hi Karsten,
Interesting reply about the nitrite. I'll keep that in mind if they decide not to spawn anymore
After the first time spawning they did so twice after that but I didn't collect the eggs that time.
The fry are in a tank with some sand. I read that here on the site. I also had the tip of the snails but I'm not into snails so I have to think about that
I don't know how you call them in english but I mean the big yellow snails (appelslakken, maybe someone could transelate that for me?). Can I do without the snails??
So far so good! The fry have started eating and are very active

Hello,
Here is a little update about the fry from the C. Schulzei.
They are about a week old now and doing fine
Haven't had any losses so far, still about 200-250 of them.
There diet has been liquid artemia and today for the first time I gave them some micro worms.
Here is a picture. Sorry for the quality.....they are still so small

Hi there,
These little guy's are doing fine!!
There growing well and are now about 5-6 mm, two weeks old. They are also looking more like corydoras.
I've started feeding them soaked tablet foods as well now and they seem to like it.
I'll keep updating my progress

Here is a picture of a couple of them witch I placed in the tank with the parents.
