How many Syno Granulosus are in the uk?

Post by Richard B »

Dinyar's article in the CotM archive states that only a few (20-30) used to be exported yearly before the advent of modern diving methods & now several hundred can be exported in a year.

I still don't see many about, so besides those captive bred from Neil Hardy Aquatica, does anyone know how many wild caughts come to the uk in a year?

Or would uk based keepers like to post in this thread? Who's got 'em & how many?

Cheers

I have never seen a genuine specimen at all. They're too expensive for most shops to sell. There are some hybrids around, though.

Cheers guys

Syno-kev - can i ask where in preston?

I know Trimar in Cornwall was selling the F1s @ £115 - "synoguy" has one of these.

Aqua Blue Zaire in Peterlee generally has them (Although not at the moment) & these go for £150.

Worton - do you personally have 4? I saw a couple in my visit to Krakow :D (Still wish i could've bought the irsacae back with me though  )

Maidenhead Wheatley had one last year but i missed seeing it.

I currently have 3 - 2 F1 (4-4.5")as in my avatar & 1 W/c (7")

I do hear of them at stores now & again & see them advertised at stores' web-pages from USA & Germany but there must be quite a few in the uk, but perhaps not owned by PC regulars.

The guy at Aqua Blue Zaire used to have 12 himself!!! His last one was sold to a collector in liverpool. The F1s have also been supplied to shops that helped NHA with the initial adults for the breeding project.

I assume there are a fair few out there that we won't know about :(

Hi Richard

The Granulosus near Preston were at Aqualife which is between Preston and Southport near a village called Croston. They had 4 in and although they took a while to sell they have all gone now. They were around the £120 mark with a discount if you bought 2. I looked at them every time I went in and they were wonderful looking fish.

I'm pretty sure they were from the same place that you mentioned in you thread last year about them being bred in the UK

Cheers

Cheers Tony

If they were small chances they were f1s (particulalrly as there were 4!), as all the w/c i've seen seem to be a fair bit bigger - not surprising they took a while to go as that's not the average price of a tropical fish!!!

I keep meaning to start calling them Granulosa but it's so hard to remember to do so :(

Aqua Blue Zaire in Peterlee, North East England, often have S. Granulosus, all as far as I know are wild caught. According to their stocklist they have two in at the moment, selling at £150 each.

You're welcome, but I should have expanded a little: the specimen lived in a show tank and was not for sale. So if the fish is still alive, I'm quite sure he still has it. Jools should know for sure.

I've just noticed the date on their online stocklist - 14 June 2007! They do seem to get them quite regularly, so if you haven't been in touch with them lately I'd either give them a phone call or email them.

I have one that was born last year at Neil Hardy Aquatica. It eats like a horse and is now 10cm SL.

Nice one Barry - i'm interested to see how these F1s progress, my 2 mix well with a larger w/c, but i put this down to keeping the lake synos as you would mbuna to spread any aggression.
