Adopted a new syno
Maidenhead Wheatley sold this to me for £5.00 (about U.S. $10.00). Somebody had bought it in. When I get a better pic I'll post it for I.D. My best guess is . (Its eye isn't really that big, it's just distorted by the plastic bag).

it's hard to see from the "in-the-bag" photo

Re: Adopted a new syno
can you even imagine how scary it must be to be a fish in a bag? I mean for a short trip home it's prob bad enough, but imagine for like a long distance, in a plane?
Sorry, a bit off topic.

andywoolloo - fish are not as complex or advanced creatures as we are so although they wouldn't be completely happy, i'd take some far more educated than i, to say how scary they'd find the experience, distressing, yes somewhat, but scary...hmmmmm

Re: Adopted a new syno
I think it definitely is punctifer, it's a perfect match. I must have missed that one when I went through the Cat-eLog. Thanks, Birger.

I would still like to see a picture of it when it is feeling good(if possible), the one in the pictures in the Cat-eLog does not look like it is enjoying its present situation.

Re: Adopted a new syno
It's quite shy, but it made a couple of short dashes out of the bogwood this morning. If I can catch it at the front of the tank I'll try to get some pics.
The silly thing is, at the LFS it was right out in the open but I didn't have my camera with me.

Re: Adopted a new syno
Well, it's almost certainly Synodontis punctifer. Somebody brought it in along with a nigrita. I suspect that it was originally a contaminant in a batch of nigritas, because I have gotten several unusual synos that way. (And sometimes had a darned hard time identifying them, but then what do you expect....
LATER EDIT: It looks like I'll need to take good care of it because nobody else has it on their list.

I tells ya there's gold in them thar nigrita tanks.
LFSs must wonder why I always seem to be so interested in them.

Re: Adopted a new syno
It's always good to spot an oddity in a tank of fish - such a shame suppliers are getting a bit wiser

Finding out what your new oddity actually is and how big it will get tends to be the problem.

Hmmm - yes if you buy it when you're not sure. I was thinking more about finding (for example) anadoras grypus in with acanthadoras hancocki or an odd microglanis amongst all the regular ones, type of thing.
