Hara jerdoni Behavior

Post by bronzefry »

I was about to do a small daily water change in the Hara jerdoni tank when I spotted this:
Image
(sorry for the poor quality) One smaller fish was atop the larger. Is this dominance or a breeding overture? I don't want to read too much into it since I just got the fish. The behavior doesn't last long. About 15-30 seconds. I've seen it three times over the past 2 weeks, usually in the morning.
Thank you,
Amanda

Hi Amanda

I think what you have is adult domineering behaviour. I see this in a lot of Erethistes species, especially around feeding time, or when two adults happen to meet.
Years ago I had some large Erethistes horai, in a community tank, that had a branch like, piece of bog wood in it, one fish would retire regularly to a place on the top side of the wood, whereas the other would retire to the underside, they were quite happy until feeding time or after I had turned the lights out, when they became more active; but when they met they really set about each other until the smaller one swam away.
But basically these are only little set to's which are over in a few seconds with no damage occurring to either fish.

Medaka,
That sounds exactly like this. I watched them a while longer yesterday. These two fish like the sponge filter, mostly. The larger one likes the top of the sponge filter, where a lot of food lands. The smaller one likes the weighted base and the underside of the sponge filter. After a time, the smaller one will begin to eat around the sponge filter, making its way to the top, where the larger one is sitting. A bit of "blocking" begins and they sit on the substrate for a few seconds. It begins again. The cycle I watched took over an hour.
