Chaca chaca

Post by Chrysichthys »

It was nice to see another Asian cat on the LFS's list, but I decided to give this one a miss for the time being. What I would like to know is how difficult it is to get them to feed, or wean them off live feeders. If it's not a problem I'll get one next time.
Also is there any truth to the story that they can lower the pH of the water they're put in?

I have kept both C. chaca and C. bankanensis, and have not been able to wean them off feeders. Very young individuals will eat bloodworms, but it's a strict fish-only diet for the adults.
They are also picky about water conditions and readily develop ulcers (from infections) with bad water conditions. Chaca bankanensis is associated with very acidic brown water systems, so the pH of the tank needs to be lower than usual.

It looks like the Lancer is a better choice, then. Thanks for all of your time.

We kept several C. bankanensis for a long time, and were never able to get them off feeders. We only fed ours once every one or two weeks, so it wasn't that bad.

Yes, I do think it's true that they can lower pH. Their tank needed constant rebuffering, or else the feeders would die before the Chacas got to them.

Well, I guess that's not the tail of a Chaca in Rusty's avatar, huh? I seem to recall from Kobayakawa that Chaca has fused hypurals (is that the correct term?). Which other cats do? Is there are a phylogenetic pattern in this?

Plotosids also have fused hypurals. Chacids and plotosids might be sister taxa as they share this and a few other characters (such as the anterior prolongation of the caudal-fin rays along the body).
