i just bought this little guy, i am just wondering what kind of Royal Panaque is he? he was labelled as a L27c
I'm thinking he might actually be a L27a, the reason being the spots next to his tail and on his belly.
Unfortunately, the "window" in the caudal fin is not a reliable sign of which variant of Panaque cf. nigrolineatus it is.
The country of origin would be a better indicator, as L027a/L330 is from Rio Orinoco (border of Venezuela and Colombia, so exported from Colombia), whereas L027c is from Rio Xingu - exported from Brazil. Of course, fish that goes to Australia may still go via Colombia or some other "west coast" country. Ideally we would like the collectors, exporters, importers, wholesalers and shops to keep records of which river the fish comes from, but most of the links in that chain range from unreliable to useless [when you ask the comment is "where would you like it to be from?" or some other similar reply].
I personally would say that the broken lines on the lower back end indicate L330 - but I could certainly be wrong.
I'm also slightly worried that your mix of fish isn't that great - goldfish prefer slightly cooler water in my experience - yes, they tolerate warm water, but ideal water temperaure is in the low 20's or below (low 70's F), and your Panaque will prefer the mid-to-high 20's. (Low 80's F)
Any chance you could find out from the shop where it was exported from?
Yeah i've been trying to get rid of the goldfish for a little while. It was previously a goldfish tank and i am trying to convert it to a SA tank.
I can't find any buyers for the last of the goldies.
i will definitely expand the sand bit, do you think i should put sand across the whole front?
There is no way that i could find out where his from as i bought it from a private seller.
It would be a very good idea to put sand on the whole bottom of your tank as this bid gravel doesnt serve any purpose for your fish...They cant dig and its not as soft as sand...They will definetely like it much more on a sandy bottom
Very nice fish not matter what type it is.
I would also recommend completely covering the tank in sand. Not only will the plecos enjoy it more, that geo you have will exert its "eartheating" habits ONLY if you have sand.
