Pictus habit..please help !

Post by tommo »

We have had a Panther Catfish for a couple of weeks now and it seems to have a strange, maybe worrying habit that I would like to know if anyone else who owns one can help at all.

The fish seems to constantly swim up / down at the same corner of the tank. This happens almost all the time, can anyone assist ?

Many thanks

How large is the tank, and are you keeping it alone?

Its 3ft in length, 1ft width and a 1ft 1/2 deep and takes 21.1 gallons. The fish is full of different species, angelfish, other catfish, red tail black shark and smaller fish, barbs of some sort. When we purchased the fish we advised the assistant at the aquarium about what was in the tank and we were advised that there should be no problem. We also purchased an angelfish that day and that has settled in okay.

Sounds like your tank is a little crowded. Pictus cats enjoy plenty of space and company (they are happiest in groups of 4 or more).

Hi Tommo,
Silurus is right.I have also seen a pictus doing the same in the dealers tank because someone had just picked the other five pictus which was with him in the tank and he was alone.
