Entomocorus question for Marc!

Post by Richard B »

I saw some "woodcats" at GLEE today on a stand of a well-known importer/wholesaler - (they didn't know what they were). I immediately thought they were entomocorus but i wasn't sure if they were benjamini or something else.

They were all similar about one & a half inches - the basic body colour looked like benjamini but with a thick black horizontal stripe through the upper lobe of the caudal & a faded but distinct small dorsal spot adjacent to the hard ray at the bottom.

any ideas?

Entomocorus has four described species; they can be distinguished by their tails. A small image from the paper describing this is at this Practical Fishkeeping article: http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/p ... ?news=1190. In order from top to bottom, the caudal fins in said image are benjamini, gameroi, melaphareus, radiosus. There is also a description of this in the article.

Look like lovely little fish - wish I'd been there as some of these would have definitely come home with me...on the assumption that I hadn't already found something to buy :D
Are they difficult to keep?
Hope you had a good day Richard,

It's not strictly a retail event so i didn't but anything & it is more a small display of species available from this importer- your lfs may have an account with them so could order them in if they do.

It was a pleasant day as the aquatics section is pretty small compared to the whole event but i did catch up with an old friend & bagged a few freebies :D

They were a lovely little fish & very active in the brightly lit display tank, not shoaling but every fish was "on the go"

hi Richard
Can you tell me who the importer is - by PM if you'd prefer. I will call my LFS and see if it they have an account. i know they regularly shop with Neil Hardy's and one other (whom my still fully ID'd Dolichancistrus came from), but is definitely worth a try.

Marc - any views on keeping these with perugiae?

Thanks
Martin

That should give no problems at all. However, Richard's behaviour description is very a-typical, due to the bright lit tank I guess. This is a nocturnal species, which - literally - hangs around in plants and/or objects near the surface. Males have the genital papilla and very elongated ventral spines. Good luck in finding them!

:an:
Actually, am really glad I called them today - the fish were given to Neils as a sample, but someone had already put their name down for the lot - I'm guessing someone at GLEE. The manager at my LFS called them, and asked nicely and they were kind enough to let me have 3 (I asked for 1M/2F), which should be arriving at my LFS later this week!
Am very pleased (if you hadn't guessed :D )
Thanks again

That's the thing i can't get my head round really - GLEE is trade only & you can't "buy" fish there. Those on display are a mere visual teaser as to what they can offer. They were brand new in so if someone had the lot on order, they've done a deal, (as they're quite entitled to do). Hardy's always have some great fish in. If anyone has ever been to see them or gets the opportunity, it's like being in aladins cave fish shop!!!

I wouldn't mind joining in on such a trip... Assuming of course that is a possibility...

Nice one!

The only problem i found was that i wanted loads of fish but couldn't buy any as you have to have an account with them & then spend a minimum amount (which is beyond most individuals) - you can always take a list to your lfs contact who has an account though to get them to order for you - if you do get there let me know of any Tang synos if you can - although i have a list, there are often oddities - (.

Also, if you are being shown round, ask if you can see the breeding room - there may be baby Granulosus still , but there are always some nice bits & pieces :D

Marc
After reeading this thread, are you saying that E. gameroi are not sexable by the shape of the ventral fin? That would explain why every time I try and sex them, I fail! Are there any pointers to allow these to be sexed?
Thanks

The only feature left would be the genital papilla (or modified anal fin) in males afaict.

Have been sleeping while answering I guess. The above refers to E. benjamini; E. gameroi males do get/have the elongated ventral spines.
