Spelling Short Cuts
A lot of people use them here because of Short Message Service (SMS) through phone here in the Philippines or sending messages via phone through text. Writing that way lessens the amount of time and space that one can use in sending messages via phone (which is by the way a phenomenon here in our country).
Unfortunately, these spill over into other forms of writing. It can also be a form from email and forum messages like IMHO, BTW etc...

No, seriously, people here in Manila are just mad about SMS and Nokia. I swear, Nokia is making a killing here in Manila. I personally enjoy using the Ericsson and Motorola lines. A lot of spam is also created using the SMS medium. Even the signature of Caol_ila or using the same style of art is being used here for every possible image. Right now joining gameshows and even gambling is now done via celphone through SMS! Incredible!

I shall have to admit though that I do a lot of my pl*co transactions with the young pl*comaniac using that medium as well. It's the fastest way to go and you don't have to look for a landline to get to ask for some information. By the way or BTW, ever wonder why we don't normally just call using our celphones? We don't call because it is more expensive to make actual calls than to send SMS. It costs around 1 US cent to send one SMS and around 22 US cents to make a call per minute or a fraction of a minute.
Sorry, I am completely off topic. It won't happen again.

Mike D.

actually, text messaging is fairly popular with the teens out here, a very similar system to your SMS I'm thinking.
