Corydoras and Platydoras together?

Post by Phoxinus »

Hi

I have a new aquarium of 420 liters and at the moment there are 86 different-sized Corydoras sterbai and a male Ancistrus dolichopterus. I am planning to have some larger South American catfishes like the Raphael Catfish (Platydoras costatus). Would Platydoras costatus get along with the cories or would it eat them?

I have seven banjo catfishes (Bunocephalus sp.) in an another tank and I will probably bring them into this tank later. I will be also selling a great deal of my sterbais. Do you have ideas for other suitable South American catfish species?

How big is the platydoras?
I would say they will be fine together, as long as the corys are of a reasonable size. Only worry would be if the Platydoras tried, the cory locked its fins and it could mean the death of two fish, but I think this is unlikely to happen.

careful with this mix.

there are already many catfishes in there.

now we know that Banjo's are quite tough, but in this tank they really might starve to death because there's a day crew and a night crew eating everything on the sand.

Bano's do best when there aren't that many other catfishes around

unless you feed a LOT, but then the waterparameters will go down the drain.

I have an aquarium of 180 liters which I'll make a banjo catfish tank. So problem solved.

If the sizes permit the mix with no worries of the Platydoras trying to eat the C. sterbai, then I would think if you feed frozen beef heart blend in small chunks the Banjo cat would do OK. They will strike a piece of food placed at their nose or I have even picked them up and run them around to the beef heart or chopped night crawlers by hand as if they were little vacuum cleaners. That was when I was still a teenager.
