Sexing Liosomadoras oncinus

Post by Martin S »

Following on from this thread, could the info on sexing be changed from:
Males have a genital papilla which is a modification of the anal fin. Sexually mature males also have thicker and more robust dorsal and pectoral fin spines.

I'd requested some images of small (2-3") specimens from the store who were selling them based on the current text because for me it read that the papilla was present irrespective of size/sexual maturity. I know I still have much to learn, but it may help make it clearer for anyone in the future trying to sex my favourite cats.

The part of the genital papilla goes for all auchenipterids btw. In some species it develops earlier than in others, but juveniles all look like females.
In Ageneiosidae the genital papilla even disappears after the mating season, so after that period both sexes look alike!
