Hi!!

I was browsing through the gallery of

Auchenipterichthys coracoideus

when I saw picture number 13... which obviously doesn't represent this species!!!

I had no idea of what it could be, but Marc probably has the answer!!

Hi Yann,
You've certainly made a good observation. I've been thinking about this one too in the past, but had forgotten about it.
It's clearly an Auchenipterichthys, yet no longimanis nor punctatus. Which leaves just two described species. So it's either a very dark (recently wild caught) coracoideus or - which would be nice - a genuine A. thoracatus.
I'll have to do some reading

Should I put it in Auchenipterichthys sp(1) for now? Aside from the humeral process looking quite a bit smaller, I don't see many other differences (darkness of base colour I do not think can count in this species)?

I think that's the best option for now, unless you're able to count the anal fin rays.
A. coracoideus has 25 or fewer branched anal fin rays, whereas A. thoracatus shows 26 or more.
This and the distribution tell them apart.
