What is the largest species of Corydoras?
I'm currently working my way through a teeny tiny cory phase, with a shoal of Hastatus. I'm getting to the point where I'm wanting to see how big these "sea kittens" (UGH!) can get. So what are the largest species? How hard are they to keep? To spawn?

Ahh, excellent. I was looking for exactly that function, and just couldn't find it. Danke.

Re: What is the largest species of Corydoras?
Be aware though this is a general, but mostly highly accurate guide.
There is always the exception to the rule - NHA (importer) had a tank of Narcissus at GLEE (tradeshow)3 years ago that were 90-110mm TL & i once (many years ago) saw a Paleatus in a (quite poor) display tank in a fishing tackle/pet shop which was the biggest cory i ever did see, maybe 120mm. However both the above mentioned species are in the top 30 biggest list of 288 species showing the accuracy of the list

Current biggest Cory I've ever seen was a 78mm albino aenas my favorite LFS had in their "giants" tank. Along with clown loaches of unusual size and their official "warning, this is how big common plecos can get!" pleco.

Also Brochis grow large and are Corydoras in every way except by name.

Aren't brochis now included in corydoras? http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/view ... 14&t=24951Mike_Noren wrote:Also Brochis grow large and are Corydoras in every way except by name.

Re: What is the largest species of Corydoras?
Yes, there is a scientific consensus that they by relationship belong inside the present Corydoras, and a name change has been formally proposed but hasn't been widely accepted - in the cat-eLog and most everywhere else you'll still find them under the name Brochis.Richard B wrote: Aren't brochis now included in corydoras? http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/view ... 14&t=24951
I don't personally work with the group, but from what I've read it seems the reason most still treat Brochis as separate from Corydoras is because everyone believes that the present Corydoras will be split in to several new genera, and when that happens it is likely that Brochis will reappear.

I have at least 3 Robustus females that are 4-1/4". Not sure what that converts to in mm's, but I always get "WOWs" from people that see them!

Re: What is the largest species of Corydoras?
Bear in mind that the Cat-eLog uses Standard Length, so 90mm is about 3.5", and I can believe that a 3+" cory has a caudal fin that is at least 3/4" - if your fish exceeds 90mm not counting the caudal (tail) fin, please take a photo of your fish with a ruler beside it, and I'll amend the Cat-eLog to match your size.fishnut2 wrote:I have at least 3 Robustus females that are 4-1/4". Re: What is the largest species of Corydoras?
This image shows the pair of C. robustus I had a few years back, the female measured 105 mm SL (4 1/8") 122 mm TL (4 3/4"). The male was around 90 mm SL. The current CSG show size for this species is 85 mm SL males, 90 mm SL females, it may be increased when more larger specimens are seen on the show bench. A standard cannot be increased just on the size of a single pair, it has the based on several sightings.
Now the largest Corydoradinae species is thought to be being Brochis Britskii, this has been reported as being seen at sizes as large as 7" (177 mm) not sure if this is SL or TL either way a large fish. The sightings were made by two people, Heiko Bleher and Dr Joachim Knnack on different occasions. However there are no imges from either man to confirm there existence.
S. barbatus is also another giant in the Cory world, but is one where the male breaks the rule and is larger than the female weighing in at around 100 mm SL.
