Post by Dave Rinaldo »

While viewing , I noticed there is no
listing for Trachelyichthys decaradiatus.

Maybe just lack of pictures?

They are two (slightly) different species; see last post of provided link.
Of course I don't know if you were thinking of that one.....
There have been other threads in the past; I posted one for example when I just had my T. exilis and had doubts which of the two species it actually was. At the time I was unaware of the article that described T. decaradiatus.

After a bit of searching, actually a lot of searching, i'm sure this was indeed the thread of info i had in mind - so closely related with subtle differences NOT the same - oops!

So, that means that Dave is right, and a new species is needed?

Indeed it does but we'll need careful comparisons of any pics if the differences are so slight.

I am wondering if the pictures in the Burgess Atlas (if any of you have it) on page 590 are identified correctly, there is one of decaradiatus and two of exiles

I'd say they're all T. exilis. There are 7 misidentifications on those 2 (590-591) pages, but bear in mind the Burgess dates from 1989 (and was very valuable to me for a long time).

I would personally not include species without a picture or drawing.
For if you do so, you might as well add all catfishes known sofar, which will create a second FishBase.

Well, I can't do anything anyways - Jools is the only person that can add new species. I have no more privileges to modify the Cat-eLog than you have - we can submit updates to the Cat-eLog data-entries, but noth change the species, add/remove pictures etc.

But I agree with you as a general rule, and Jools seems to have the same rule.

So the question is...are all the pics of exilis in cat-e-log, exilis or any decardiatus?

Mmm, not always. Where it is a "hobby species" (or at least a name used in the hobby), I can be persuaded. Stuff like Perrunichthys perruno or Synodontis dhonti.

I have added the new species entry because of the "hobby species name rule". This is mainly so that people searching under that name will find it here but with some notes saying it's likely to be T. exilis and also (hopefully) some explanation on how to tell the difference.

Go data sub team!

I have written up a bit on T. decaradiatus - Marc and anyone else, could you please check it over and amend or comment here if there is anything missing/wrong?
