Ageneiosus

Post by Martin S »

I was looking on TropicalFishFinder earlier today, and Wildwoods are advertising 8-10cm for sale, so, out of interest, I emailed and asked for the possibility of getting some photos to confirm ID. They have very kindly come back and said they will try over the next few days, but that they also have just received some juvenile , which are currently in quarantine - I think I may have to pay them a visit just to see these in the flesh!
As there are no pics of A.vittatus, it will be interesting to see what they are - will post any pics I receive (with Wildwoods OK of course).

Hey martin, would you be able to keep the A. marmoratus in a 125 gallon tank?

SL for A.marmoratus is listed as 12" - what sort of dimensions is a 125? Here in the UK we go by dimensions rather than volume, but as long as you can give it the 4Lx2Lx2H, i.e. 4'x2'x2', one or more should be fine. As I understand it, these are more active than most other auchenipterids, especially if more than one is kept. I'm sure Marc will be along shortly to provide more useful info than I.

Is a 125G a six foot? these cats need swimming space as when they go for a dash they cover a lot of distance.....

Hi Martin,
I take it the "A. vittatus" will turn out to be for traders like using familiar names - which this one is. Still, see for yourself. Might be the true species after all.

A. marmoratus...... :P This shop is not near the Convention area, is it?

Yes, I look forward to the pics as it would be good to know if these are correctly ID'd. Out of interest (as it's not in the catelog record) how big to sp3 get?
[Edit]Just seen your comments about staying within 20cm (8") - the pics do look like much bigger fish!

No, sadly it's not :(
They do deliver inside the UK though...

If you can get some, I'd say go for them! As Richard stated they do tend to 'dash' sometimes, but think you should be OK with 1 or 2, as long as they have plant cover and don't get spooked too often by their surroundings.

Marc - if you're not familiar with Wildwoods, you need to make a visit next time you are over here! I'll even take you there!

I rate them very highly indeed - they've had species i've never encountered before on a few occasions (not just cats).

They've had marmoratus before & polystictus, magoi, probably others :D

Wildwoods is North of London, along the M25 (ring-road around London, around 15-20 miles from central London).

It is about 200 miles away from the Convention.

Thanks all. I may be able to visit them one day.
For now I hope that Neil (Pier Aquatics) will have a surprise in store (*) around the convention time and I wouldn't mind if that would be a small(-er) Ageneiosus species

(*) it's very likely he has plenty of surprises, but I have to limit myself......
