Snail eating catfish?
I am wondering if there is a South American catfish that likes snails???? It can also not get big (4") as I have a 26 show tank. I have all So Amer. fish in there so not wanting to add loaches if I can help it since it seems they are all Asian (?).

Most of the snail-eating South American cats (e.g. Leporacanthicus, Megalodoras, Pseudodoras) grow way beyond 4". You can try smaller doradids, but they may prefer other foods to snails. Read this post for more ideas.

well, L264 doesn't get to a massive size, 6 inches or so, right? so maybe a possibility... but under 4 I can think of nothing from SA that'd like snails.
