Strange bug in Daphnia bag - is that safe? (with pics)

Post by rossss »

Hi there,
I've been visiting Planet Catfish for some time now but I've just joined the forum, great site btw
I bought a couple of bags of daphnia from the LFS to feed the fish, but in one bag there was a strange bug thats definately NOT a daphnia and i dont know how safe it is or if i should stop buying daphnia from this LFS altogether.

Tbh, the bags are full of cyclops which are probably eating the baby daphnia, so not much daphnia, and i've had damsel/dragonfly nymphs in them before too (they actually survived fine in the tank and hatched into damselflies, theres one dragonfly nymph in there just now).

Anyway, to the point, there was a small ball flying around the daphnia bag at full speed, its about the same size as a fully grown large pregnant daphnia, but black, an almost perfect sphere shape, with 6 tiny very fragile looking legs (maybe 8, it moves so fast its hard to see). It goes really fast around in the water, and with the size of the body compared to the legs it kind of reminds me of a louse of some sort. Due to the size and speed of it, its very difficult to photograph, but i've done my best.

Not sure how safe this is but does anyone recognise it? I've never seen one of these before and i dont know if i should stop buying live food from this particular store altogether or if this is just a regular thing that everyone experiences with live food, do other people find things other than daphnia in their bags?

P.S. I put a small piece of cucumber in the container the bug is being held in, i was feeding the fish anyway and thought maybe this test would tell me if the bug is herbivorous or not, but it doesnt seem interested in the least which makes me slightly more paranoid about it, not sure how effective that test is but thats whats happened anyway.

aquatic mite

harmless and also unedible for most fish

most of these are scavengers or little hunters.

it's not a parasite, and actually the fact that this and the damselfly larvae are in your daphnia supply indicates the water is quite clean.
