Unexpected addition

Found this little guy yesterday evening, guess (s)he finally thinks (s)he's big enough to venture out from under the bogwood..





I suspect this is the mother - posing next to her favourite spot for sticking eggs. I should probably clean the glass more often

This one will be the grandchild, conceivably the great-grandchild, of the three original

Corydoras paleatus

I bought three or four years ago.
The original trio + more offspring are in a different tank.
This thread was my (slightly breathless ) account of that first spawning.

When they decide to spawn (which is often), they are hard to beat for entertainment value.
I've stopped deliberately trying to raise the fry - I've nowhere to put them, but it is nice when one pops up out of nowhere.

That's adorable! Do you have any other catfish in the same tank? I'm wanting to move my fry to the big tank but I'm a little chicken to try it. How big is the 'little' one? Mine are only 1/4 inch or 5mm.

The only other fish in there is a small Ancistrus (who c***ps more than all the Corys put together).

It's a tough call... I think the ideal would be if you had a spare 30 litre 7.5Gal tank or bigger to grow them on in. In there they wouldn't have to compete with or hide from the bigger fish & will grow bigger/faster. & you'll be able to keep an eye on them,
There definitely comes a point where they will do better in your big tank than in a breeding trap/net though.
Once they look like mini versions of their parents they do seem to be pretty good at fending for themselves., so if there is a jumble of wood that the big fish can't get their snouts under & you feed some finely ground food it might be OK.
My strategy for figuring out what works is to try half with one method and half with another. Often this means I end up killing half the fry, (sometimes all of them!) but it does rapidly lead to a method that works. As you yourself have commented elsewhere, these fish spawn frequently so if it all goes wrong you get to have another go.

Yup, I've got several spawns in the floating tank and more eggs. I'd have to look the other way if I tried a few in the big tank.

Hope it's not bad manners to revive a month old thread, but I thought it would be worth showing the difference a month makes..

Also, I found another (I think there might be more than one ) new appearance..

Here's the fish from above - growing fast & seems to have the right number of bits and pieces.


And this is what turned out for breakfast this morning.. The larger Cory in the pic is also a juvenile maybe 1.75"

How many Corys can be kept in a 20Gal tank? I think I'm in danger of finding out..
I've lost count, but the population is now certainly in the high teens. So I think some are going to have to go to the LFS soon.
The only other fish in there is a juvenile Ancistrus which does a great job on the algae but is sometimes a bit stroppy with the Corys. They seem to realise that its bark is worse than its bite though & just dance around it.

Filtration is an Eheim Classic 2213 canister filter + an internal Powerball filter.
I change 30% of the water weekly. The local water is really soft so I add a small amount of bicarbonate of soda with the new water to keep the hardness somewhere measurable.
pH was around 6.6-6.8 last time I checked.

I'm pretty sure that the jumble of bog wood & the hiding places it offers is the reason that this tank seems to be so productive whilst my other tankful of these guys is not.

It is good for you man, I guess i'm gonna try it by my self too... guys Where do you think could we find this cat fish?
I think it is good to have this one, but I don't have any idea of how really big it is...
