Brochis splendens quick questions

Post by nvcichlids »

Are these guys carnivores towards other fishes eggs/fry? They are striking in my eyes and wouldn't mind a shoal of them, I just would, once again, like to keep them in a breeding community setting. Would this be possible or would this not be recommended? Also, what would be a great treat food for them if I happen to get a shoal on sunday?

I would not do it.

As far as I know, in this aspect Brochis is much alike Corydoras, and I've had Corydoras elegans eating lots of cichlid fry

Whether you say :P or :? depends obviously on you point of view, but they will eat them

For free swimming fishes they pose much less a danger

If it fits in their mouth, they will probably eat it. I've not had a problem with them omnoming my guppy fry, but I wouldn't be comfortable saying that they don't.

OTOH, they are my 2nd favorite of the "cory" cats. I have a mixed shoal of splendens and the other two species (Hognosed, and giant) and they are quite eyecatching. Far more active than any of my 10 or so other species of cories. They constantly sit at the front of the glass, in the open, ignoring the highly planted rear of the tank where most of my other cories hide. Fun fish.

As for favorite foods, mine go INSANE for blood worms. Secondly would be standard shrimp pellets.
