Didn't find rosacea, psoriasis, freckles or acne. Not even sunburn....

never heard of this, and hence a request: please remind yourself that if you put a hint up: think internationally, otherwise it will turn into a small "incrowd game' where only people from a certain area will understand what you're talking about.....
Just becuase you've never heard of it, doesn't therefore make it a bad clue. Knowing Dave was from the US I checked out US street names - the point being that's part of the chase. What's the difference between using something from a certain area and using some reference to a particular section of culture that only some people will get.

If we can't see that this entire thread isn't a "small in-crowd game" then we are being very, very shortsighted...

so?

you're being blinded by your own view on this, and contradicted by your own argument:
if it already is a small incrowd game, making it even smaller to a tiny incrowd of the small incrowd will only make this topic go fubar completely.

anyway, anyone fancy a guess?
#1: same species name as a docile large catfish
#2: both that one and 1 have a special kind of skin
#3: I have a lot of character

new hint:
I almost glow in the dark, my fins are beacons in the dark night.
if there's ever a candidate for a catfish that gives off light, I'm that catfish.

It's definitely worldwide but just kinda small and we have many fish to go so we need more people to poke their guesses (or ideas) in here

Certainly not an incrowd, just people who like to puzzle and don't know fish, people who really do know fish and some of us who have no issues of making the occasional fool of ourselves (Have you seen some of my guesses and clues?? )
But it's fun and addictive and I've learned more on this than any other thread so it's not going fubar any time soon. And Grokefish would be be disappointed, I'm only babysitting here
And where's Dave R? Maybe I should bribe him back with a drawing of a nice fish?

Back to the fish:
I don't get the glow part with Jools' guess, so I'll wait for sidguppy's reply to his guess.

Synodontis granulosus

and yes, I beg to differ with that idiot who wrote the paper because of too much spare time and changed all the speciesnames into these ridiculous wordwrecks.

luckily I'm not exactly the only one who disagrees; there's a fair number of real ichthyologists that won't go with that 1.

Might play is to suggest that both players (there are two of them) aren't always first choice for those two teams. To help you all along, this species is a first in this serial guessing game because it belongs to the same genus as the last correct guess.

Thus, being confident the above is the correct answer, here's a new riddle:

I'm named after the person who wrote this:
"Auchenysteridae {sic}. Again South American catfishes related to Doradidae, equally uninteresting although also quite small and not yet bred in captivity.
Need another one?
"Helogenidae. A family of nocturnal, uninteresting and unattractive catfishes from the Amazon and Gyuana.

Btw: these quotes are the full family descriptions from the book.....

i read it at your place then, and you probably told me about this quote recently

because i ran through my books and behold: no Axelrod......

then I checked hoedemann; another scientist who rejected any interesting things about any catfish non pleco, non cory.
but there's no Corydoras hoedemanni, so it had to be our ancient taxman avoiding runaway suspect

OK here's a new one, and it's not that hard:
if catfishes were people, my genusname would be the same as THE patriarch and also the first name of a very famous POTUS
because I am at the root of all things

as genera go, well, at least I still lived when someone took out the camera......

I share my home with no other catfish.

no, the catfish doesn't share a name with one!

the POTUS and the ultimate "patriarch" have the same name.

and his name is according to the legends "at the root of all things", just like this catfish is in the Siluriformes.

the prez is a "good president", someone fondly remembered.
so is the patriarch.

ow, I believe the prez has a ship named after him as well. a HUGE ship with a LOT of firepower.
and a statue. famous as anything. and it's white :P

a hint for the name: as well as very well known, both persons are also known for their femous beard.......
the patriarch is known by all 3 major religions, hence "THE PATRIARCH

another hint: don't confuse patriarch with 'first person ever', that's not the guy :D

find his name, then think in the same vein about Siluriformes and find me a live one ;)

Abraham is the right name!

according to the peoples of the book, Abraham is the patriarch/ancestor of the people.

find a catfish that is also at the root of all catfishes ;)

for this a bit of taxonomy and family traits is needed :P

the other hint:
as genera go, well, at least I still lived when someone took out the camera......
think in the same vein about Siluriformes and find me a live one
is aimed at the catelog!

only one is alive, the others in my family are not. I'm the live one.
