Compatible species

With the recent death of my 18" Asian Red Tail a friend gave me a Jack Dempsy, a large Blue Texas Cic. and a 6 inch Pleco. I have a 100 gallon tank with a bit extra filtration (i run a fluval 404 and a large HOB and air stones) I tried to put a 8-10 inch Sun Cat in there but the Blue Texas wouldnt leave him alone and I took him out. I have some drift wood and a few pipes that the Jack Dempsy likes. I would like to get a largeish predatory cat (tiger shovelnose?) to add to this tank. Any recomendations? Here is a pic minus the Fluval that I just added.

Tiger shovelnose grows far too large for that size tank. Anything that grows over 12" is too large. If you intend to keep larger fish, get the tank first.

Unfortunately, both Texas and JD's are fairly aggressive species, so your best bet is really the armoured ones (plecos and perhaps larger Callichtyids). Or strictly nocturnal species that hide in a cave during the day - but you wouldn't see much of them of course.

The cichlid right of centre doesn't look like either of the ones you mention - it appears to be a flowerhorn or trimac or similar...

I echo what Mats says on size in realtion to a TSN. Do you really want a predatory cat - sussing something that will fit in could be tricky indeed

might work but is a naked cat & prone to attack by inquisitive brutish cichlids (attracted to the long whiskers, invasion of territory etc).

Pseudopimelodus bufonius

might work better but again, doesn't stand up to an attack...ditto

Chrysichthys ornatus

Mystus leucophasis

might work but similar to above.

My best suggestion is to look at some of the medium doradids... maybe

I got 1, some 10 years now, which has spend all thet time with large cich lids. I think these are a bit scared of him, due to the whiskers

I never saw anyone try to bite it - even though I kept it with quite nasty fishes, the worst were Parachromis motaguensae, red, male 30 cm, female 20 cm, with fry and a territory of over 2 meters * 1 meter

no problems - although I think it likes its current company - Asatatoheros margiritifer, A nourisatti and 1 lone male P motaguensae, also red, of some 20 cm, better

He does resemble a flowerhorn...Just going by what i was told. JD is smaller, about 5 inches and he is in the pipe and the Pleco is in the middle of the wood, you can see his eye reflection.

I had a striped ralph. with my ART and he did well, although he only got to about 4 inches.
I tried to put in a 8-9inch suncat but he got pretty beat up, mostly from trying to escape inquisitive brutish c*****ds (i like that, it fits perfectly) I had to take him out.

i figured the TSN would get too big.
It annoys me that stores sell these types of fish and ppl buy them and don't know what they are getting. TSN, arowanna, clown knife, red tails....The sales kid has no clue what he is selling either. Doesn't seem very responsible.
