this came in to BAS in bolton with an african shipment 1 fish only species not know ?

any ideas
waterloti maybe ?

Might be it needs a meal or two makes it look thin and elongate, looks like waterloti to me.

I'm not sure about waterloti. Like Richard said snout is elongated like soloni has it is too sharp for waterloti. And eye seems to be too big for also. It would be interesting to see some other photos of it, i would like too see its dorsal fin. With waterloti dorsal fin is rounded. But there is not so many same kind of synos that have black barbels and waterloti is one of them. In Seegers book page 517 there is one photo of S. sp. aff. longirostris, head looks quite same with that one. I'm not saying that it is that one, it could be waterloti but it doesn't look the same that i have in my tank.

this is the only other pic i have ,
he is now in my nursery tank so i can feed him up before i move him in with the syno community tank .
so next chance i get will be in a couple of months when it gets moved again

not a bad find i think and only £8-99 im off to another shop i found on the internet on saturday who says he has various medium to larger synos approx 5 to 9 inches in a 6ft tank which he says are unidentified so im hoping to find some more gap fillers for my syno community tanks,
proberbly nothing from the congo region but who knows ?
i will keep you updated ......................................

yes nice thought but i very much doubt it !

i will keep you posted of what is there and tell you about the shop when ive visited it myself but it sounds like they stock the more unusual types of all fish .

heres hoping for a few suprizes !

well here is the update on the shop at ferrybridge aquatics near pontefract about 8 miles from leeds .
a really nice place loads of tanks will plenty of unusual catfish ,
he had a syno decoras the biggest ive ever seen about 13 inches long with a good 3 inch depth,
also loads of multis,a few petracolas,eupterus,2 or 3 L number plecs ,a good selection of corys and some other cats 6 inch and over including pim-ornatus ,a big jaguar cat about 8 inch ,2 of the biggest african glass cats ive seen about 6 or 7 inch,schilbe grenfeldi about 9 inch plus a few other odd balls in 2 large tanks with large ch****ds from south america ,and a few odd loaches he said were rare species.
as to the synos i was hoping for some suprizes but although i did find a syno to put in my collection there were no real rare ones there but worth a visit now and then !.

I think I might have a fairer idea of what the mystery syno is.

But first, two questions:

1. Do you know where the fish came from?
2. Do you have a picture ofthe underside of the head showing its mouth?

the fish came from BAS in Bolton in Lancashire and it came in with some african knife fish and other african imports it was an odd fish 1 only and was very thin as you can see,

but now it is fat ,greedy,and happy also ready to go with the main syno family in the 6ft tank so when i decide to move it i will get a few more pics

but i guess where ever african knife fish come from as that is what he said it came in with

There is more than one species of African knife fish, so that doesn't help. As I said, never mind...

usually "African Knife" means Xenomystus nigri

but HH is right, there are 2 other species of Knifefishes from Africa; the Papyrocranus species.
Papyrocranus is a lot bigger than Xenomystus, and unlike Xenomystus it has a small dorsal fin.

Also: Xenomystus is very widel;y spread, it occurs in a large area of Africa; a lot bigger than the usual range of most Synodontis species.

so if the by catch of a certain Syno is Xenomystus; it still doesn't tell much about the origin.
