Where can you find taxonomic/scientific descriptions

Post by mattfaulkner »

I have recently become interested in the taxonomy and scientific descriptions of Loricariidae, is there anywhere I can look to find them, be it on the internet or books. Specifically the Panaque genus.

Matt,
You can start with some internet searches and will turn up some starting points. Ultimately you will need access to a good University or Natural History Museum library. You should also regularly check Science News here as well as look back through it for old threads of value to you. This is especially true with Panaque as the majority of descriptions fro the genus were written 50 or more years ago.

Here is one starting place

For descriptions that are quite old, you can find some here:
http://acsi.acnatsci.org/base/documents.html

I haven't looked specifically for (what is now) Panaque spp, but I'm sure some where described during that period and thus there is some information there. Of course, you have to be aware that the descriptions in the 1800's wasn't always as detailed as it is now...

Is there any particular species you are interested in?

So, the original description (likely in German) is in Monatsb. Akad. Wiss. Berlin 1877 - a local University Library should be able to get you a (loan of a) copy of that. Unfortunately, it's not in the ACSI scanned documents that I linked to above, even though other documents in the same time-frame are there.

The Panaque dentex group (the small Panaque) has had a relatively recent review (1993). Probably not what you're looking for considering you seem to be interested in the P. nigrolineatus group (the large Panaque). Unfortunately, the large Panaque hasn't had a whole lot of recent research, except for the recent description of Panaque bathyphilus (though that was last year).

A Google Scholar search or a database search (ie. ISI Web of Knowledge) for the search term "Panaque" will give you a good idea of what papers in what journals are relevant to the topic you are looking for. With university access, you may be able to find some of these online. Alternatively, the library may have the paper copies of the journals bound in the library for you to either borrow or to copy with a copy machine. Finally, there is the possibility that the library does not have access to the journal or copies of the journal, in which case you should see if your school provides interlibrary loan, which will allow you to either receive electronic copies or paper copies of a paper that you are looking for.

I must repeat, however, that there is not a lot of work on Panaque so you're not going to find very much. There's quite a bit if you search "Loricariidae", however.

The best place to look for old papers is the Biodiversity Heritage Library.

Loads of great stuff online there, such as the Regan's entire 1904 monograph on the Loricariidae.

Enjoy
