New fish:

1) I was described 20 years ago by an American with a German(*) name, a Corydoras and a Brochis
2) the name of the American is not included in the CoF, but can be found in other animals, like for instance dwarf blue sheep
3) I'm not really one of the big boys, quite contrary actually

(* at least the name sounds German)

True, but your first answer was the one I was looking for (smallest catfish known to date; clue 3).

Anyway, well done

New fish while Marc is busy:

1. I'm found in batches of other commonly available fish.
2. I look like the fish I'm sometimes shipped with but for those who can count and are good at remembering 'faces', I'm somewhat easy to pick out.
3. I'm one of those catfish that can be recognized at a glance.

Google "Bulgarian towns": Montana.
Quick find "Montana" ->

[I tried Georgia first, but that's not a town in Bulgaria, but rather a country, I think].

Georgia is a country indeed, not far from Bulgaria.

answer is not correct. aren't there more 'montana' species?

There are indeed several others:
Pimelodella montana - not "described" (I think you mean "described" rather than "discovered") by Hora.
Clupisoma montana - Described by Hora in 1938.
Cetopsis montana - Not descrbed by Hora.

Since the first one I checked is ALSO described by Hora (in 1950 if my memory serves), I went for that without checking the others.

I guess by process of elimination, we have !

Re: what am I?

Not to worry, I couldn't say "Can I have a beer please" in Dutch, never mind discuss fish - the difference between "discovered" and "described" in this context is that a fish is (first) "discovered" when it's first found (or when someone first realizes that it's a separate species from the one it is thought to be - which may be 200 years after it was first collected), and "described" by the author of the paper giving it's scientific name.

So new fish (picked by using the "Random Pick" in Cat-eLog):
- I am from Africa.
- I was described in 1919 by Boulenger.
- My genus was described in 1816 (and hasn't changed).

okay Mats, since I'm learning so much on this site, let me teach you a phrase of Dutch!

Mag ik alsjeblieft een biertje? (Can I have a beer please?) might come in handy one day :foggie:

and thanks for explaining the difference.

i searched for 'Boulenger 1919' and first hit was it's from Africa, couldn't find a thing about the third hint so this is my guess!

Re: what am I?

You are correct. If you search in Google for Boulenger 1919, one hit will be the ITIS site, which lists (actually, the old name ending -us, but I guess they aren't as fast to update as we are here). If you click on the link to the species, it lists the hierarchy of genus, family etc, and if you click on Synodontis, it will list the original description author and year.

I'm not quite sure what the difference is, but lets say this catfish lives in one of the rivers the Pseudoplatystoma lives in as well.

Habitat: What sort of stuff the fish (or someting else) lives in, for example rocky rifle, in vegetation at the bank of the river or in driftwood tangles.
Body of water: The Amazon or a small stream joining into the River Wey in Surrey.

I think there are quite a few that match your criteria, as there are two rivers for P. carruscus, and at least the Parana river has quite a lot of inhabitants.

Wild guess
