Wood Cat... need ID... Picture Added!!!
The color of the mysterious wood cat in question was that of the , but the fish itself measured nearly 6". It's entire back was one large fin, which made me think its not really a auch. It was quite active in the tank even though the lights were on. Anyone have any ideas, sorry i forgot my camera to take pictures of it.

Re: Wood Cat... need ID
My initial thought is that it sounds like a Clariid if it has a long dorsal fin... Some of the Clarias, however, are illegal to important into the United States. I don't suppose you have a locality?

No, they were in a "mixed batch" of wood cats. the dorsal wasn't elongated at all but here is a slight description using the key board for a drawing

Front dorsal tail
Essentially, that is how this fish was set up, and about that lengeth.

Re: Wood Cat... need ID
What I meant was a long dorsal fin base. However, I'm looking at your diagram, and are you showing that there is a dorsal fin and an adipose fin/second dorsal fin with a long base? If that's the case, it isn't a clariid.

Re: Wood Cat... need ID
The diagram doesn't make any sense to me (my bad) but from your description ("It's entire back was one large fin") I really doubt that it's an auchenipterid. So if it's not too much trouble: return to the shop, take a picture and post it. That'll make things much easier.

No problem. It's just that I'd like to help you out AND that I'm very curious. If you have the time to go there, pls don't forget to take some extra shots of the woodcat mix. May I conclude btw that your "nagging" at last sorted some effect?

LOL, yeah, I just do not know where I could put this guy, he seems big and at my apartment, I do not have the "large" tank space for him. It seems like they keep getting in all the LARGE wood cats .. well I hope this guy is one I can get and keep.Marc van Arc wrote:No problem. The description makes me wonder whether it might actually be a Heptapterid.

Re: Wood Cat... need ID
I see you and raise you one ......there is a dorsal fin and an adipose fin/second dorsal fin with a long base? If that's the case, it isn't a clariid.
this is a fish with "the back all dorsal" and also both elongated dorsal and adipose present
it's also a fish with a very dark of black coloration on the dorsal side and often it has a white belly; very contrasting
and although it's not a common import, it does get around in the trade once in a while.....

the fact that it was "mixed in with Woodcats" doesn't tell you anything, because that's just what the people in the store tell you; it's likely to be far from the thruth.
if the comments I heard from LFS personnel about oddballs were actually thruthful, there should be Claridds in South America, Synodontis in Central America, Hoplosternums in Asia and on and on.
I've heard many many times that a certain fish was really imported with a certain shipment and went for a look, only to find them lying through their teeth, all because they just wanted to make a swift buck.

No, but I will try my hardest to get there asap. I had a terrible week. I cut off the tip of one of my fingers and being diabetic isn't helping the healing processMarc van Arc wrote:Did you manage?nvcichlids wrote:my day off (friday) has a trip planned to there with my camera

This is the only image I could get, he now has some tank mates I don't think he likes. It was hiding in the wood and I was told I could scare him out only once and this was my shot of him.

Any ideas?

That's a strange angle and I can imagine Jackster calling it a "Tatia species". However, I'd say it's a rather slim , probably an off colour galeatus. At first sight it resembles T. coriaceus, but it has an adipose afaics.

No, I wanted to make sure it wouldn't be a monster (at my appartment I only have 3 tanks running, 45 gal discus, 75 Tanganikan Eel/Cyprichromis, and a 20 gal L Teleogramma brichardi) I don't think he'd mix well with any of them at the moment. On a brighter note, I did speak with the owner of the largest fish store in my area and he allowed me into the "back room" and guess what he has waiting for me (well I am on the phone with him as I type to put this guy on hold as well)... well he has 6 more jag's waiting for me.. from 4.5-5" tl. He said they had ordered them for someone (ME!) , but lost the person's number.
After looking through the fish in the group you linked to.. it looked more like the in person, although he was hidden until I was allowed the one scare out lol.

I'm missing something here....
this particular fish is smaller than a jag (I assume that jag = Liosomadoras oncinus)......
45G for Discus and 6 jaguar cats (wich imo is not a good combination at all) is waayyyyyy too small.

I agree with T. galeatus and would add that this looks like the colour form we see in fish exported from Northern Argentina.

Your right, you are missing something. I keep a lot of my tanks at my parents house and my brothers house. The jag's are going in with the other jag's (you do have the correct ID there) in a large pond. Its a heated pond year round and never drops below 76 degrees. YES its outside and YES its in Wisconsin. I will be driving them home (parents house) when I pick them up.
I do thank you guys for the ID, so its T.galeatus then?

The adipose sits just left of the bent yellow/green leaf of the plant most to the left; the dorsal sits at the end of the "head shield", which is the dark part of the head.
