This fish looks to me like

Is this a young fish...I would guess about 8 cm or so.

What I am going by is the size of the eye in relation to the snout.

The only way of proving I am right would be to take a pectoral-fin ray count (soft rays), it would need 7 for grandiops and 8 for multipunctata and /or waiting for it to attain adult size where would have a much larger final size.

Another recent thread http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/view ... =8&t=27224
Head doesn't look right
I think due to the fact that the eye is larger in grandiops with a shorter looking snout and to me still looks young.

S/he is about 6-8cm in length, so is still young.
I have a front shot if thats any help at all (not sure if it will).

Gone through photos to count the pectoral-fin and can only count 7, which would mean with what Birger has said would be a Synodontis grandiops and not Synodontis multipunctata

It doesn't matter to me what species I have, as long as its from lake tanganyika (would like to keep to the same lake :) ) but I do need to get some more as I know they like to be in groups.

I don't know if price is anything to go by but I paid £15.

Again thanks guys for helping out with the ID for this chap/ess.

How well do you know the shop? Is it W/C or T/B fish? ie where does it originate from...
This looks very much like grandiops as Birger has stated & for the reason he states, but is not a typical specimen.

With all the hybrids out there, i have started to see some that are getting extremely close to genuine species, decora most often but also ocellifer.

£15 seems quite good for a fish this size if W/C but they can go much more expensive or a bit cheaper depending where you go. T/B i'd expect to less (?)

Any additional info the dealer can provide would help be certain.

Singapore is not the hot-spot for hybrids, but I wouldn't rule it out.

So I could have a hybrid on my hands?
If thats the case, I can't get anymore synos or can I?
The dealer said that he has petricola's, would (if I can) I be able to have these in with my other syno?

Sure, you can keep other synos with a hybrid. And I'm not sure it's a hybrid - it may well be that its parents are both the same species.

Would it be wise to wait till its a bit older, so the markings and what not show a bit more to the right ID?. I would like to have the same species but after the dealer said that the multipunctatus is selling at £45 a pop, I'm a bit hesitant to buy at that price.

If it's a true species, I'd say it's actually the "bigeye" S. grandiops, so you need to find either a very good LFS, or take your chances that the wild-caught fish you get isn't "real" S. multipuncata - S. grandiops is one of the newly described species, so it's often labeled as S. multipunctata.

Personally i think £45 is a bit pricey for grandiops or multis. Whereabouts in the uk are you? If you're not too far you are welcome to first shout on some of mine when i thin the numbers out..

Thank you very much Richard.

I'm all the way down in the sunny side of Essex in Colchester. Thats why I don't want to pay £45 a pop. £15 is a bit more reasonable at 3 inches.

I'd be grateful for any of your cast off's but give us plenty of warning to get transport to nottingham, lol.

I only work in Nottingham but live in Warwick so it's a hell of a lot easier! How many were you after? Multis, grandiops or not bothered which? mine are all adults 4.5" or bigger.

I'm thinking of thinning out towards the end of next month. I can possibly deliver for a can of fizzy pop & a tour of any local LFS...open to negotiations!!!

As long their from lake tanganyika not partically bothered. Can we get back to you on numbers, as we're setting up another tanganyikan tank and not sure on the number we would like at the moment. How much would you be looking at for them?

We would be happy to show you around the LFS's and provide lunch (dinner if needs be) and a bottle of fizzy pop or 2
