Methylene blue dosage
Friends of mine use methylene blue in aerated containers to protect eggs from corydoras and other species from fungi and bacteria. Dosage is just done by looking at the color of the water.
My methylene stock solution is supposedly 2% (handwritten on the bottle). How much should I use for 5 liters of water. Should the treated water be changed every day? I am trying to hatch L200 eggs.

Re: Methylene blue dosage
Haarvard,
I also purchase the 2% solution, but it comes from a manufacturer(Kordon, I think?). For Corydoras spp. whose eggs have a tendency to fungus, I use 1-2 drops per gallon(American). I think this is roughly equal to 1-2 drops per 4 liters. This worked very well on Corydoras longipinnis and Corydoras trilineatus. Ironically, the C.longipinnis eggs did well in the tank with the parents and a bunch of Ancistrus sp. and no intervention. Go figure.

Re: Methylene blue dosage
I tried the dosage you suggested, and the color of the water seems about right with 5 drops per 10 liters.
Should the water be changed every day you think?
Thank you Amanda

Re: Methylene blue dosage
Hi,
I have used Methylene blue for hatching my C. Peru Green Stripe eggs. As corydoras eggs hatch within a few days I just added the amount of M.B. and then refreshed 30% of the water in de container each day. When the eggs start hatching the M.B. will have nearly all gone. I've learned it like this because I was tought that it is not so good for the fry.
Succes with hatching your L200 eggs

Re: Methylene blue dosage
Any "medication" that has an effect is very likely to have some side-effect too. Methylene blue isn't highly harmful to vertebrates, but that's not to say that it's healthy to let the fry swim in it.Proteus wrote:dont some people swear that they cause problems instead of preventing problems? Re: Methylene blue dosage
Well... I have to use something, otherwise the eggs will die of bacterial infections. Suggestions about other chemicals are welcome. So far the eggs are developing without infections. As hatching approaches I will let the dosage thin out to nothing. I feel very confident about this attempt

Re: Methylene blue dosage
when I purposely collected the panda cory eggs and put them in the tiny containers and let it float in the tank- no water chem/changes and I let a single ramshorn snail do its job- it kept the container fungus free- and the eggs which weren't fertilized were eaten
I do this once in a while though as I just don't bother to collect their eggs as I should start doing that and start being serious about it those days though.

Re: Methylene blue dosage
You're welcome. Apologies for not getting back sooner. I usually change water if I see a lot of particulate matter in the tank, that attach to the eggs. I have friends that swear by keeping their Corydoras spp. eggs in the dark. They cover the tanks for a few days. It works for them. It didn't work for me. Good luck with the eggs!Haavard Stoere wrote:I tried the dosage you suggested, and the color of the water seems about right with 5 drops per 10 liters.

Re: Methylene blue dosage
Thanks again Amanda
I changed water 1-2 times a day and reduced the amount of methylene blue to very low.
It might become my best L200 brood so far
I will continue to update in this thread about the progress:
