Imperfect pictures better than none?

Post by L number Banana »

Should we try to submit less than perfect pictures if there are no pictures of the fish or no similar pictures in the Cat-eLog? I'm thinking of imperfect focus, bad background etc.
I have some that are likely F.henriquei according to Retzer & Page 1997 because the others are ruled out or would something like this one go under sp.3?

It's one of the farlowella I lost last week so there won't be any better pictures coming. :(

Also, should I try to submit a clear picture of my yellow-ish F.vittata just so people can see that they're not always the same colour?

less than perfect - I think depending on how bad less than perfect is, they might help

If I may make a little excursion, the US sub-prime mortgages were far worse then prime, and if less than perfect results in a black, white spotted Ancistrus (further black) above a black background, I don't think this wil help anybody. But the same Ancistrus on a light gray stone, taken through a not very clean front window, might still provide a lot of information

But, as usual, Jools should decide

Submit the pictures to Jools (webmaster) or me (mats) at planetcatfish. If you send pictures to me, copy Jools so that he's aware of what's going on.

Of course, if it's a new species, we'll also have to add the new species. And to do that, the picture must be good enough to ID the fish - whether it is then technically a master-piece or just "oh, well, it's not completely rubbish" is less of an issue. We have some pretty rubbish pictures of some fish - and plenty of pictures of dead (preserved) ones for that matter, which is typically a case of "a picture is better than no picture".

I'd say if you are not 100% certain on the ID, then you perhaps should post the photo in the ID section first, and at the same time ask if it's good enough for Cat-eLog.

Will do, I posted it before but no luck. Will try again with the pictures I found added and see what everyone thinks.

Thanks

Yes, do so. To add a picture to Cat-elog I'd need either:
1. A confirmed (or at least 99% sure) ID
or
2. A confirmed "none of the species we have in the Cat-eLog"

Hi Mats, pictures are posted but I had the old thread in another forum, can you move the whole whack over to What's my catfish? and that way others can see what the first thoughts from other posters were.
It's here:

Thanks

Not quite sure what you want to move - this thread into the one in the ID section?

Oops sorry should have been more clear.
Could you move the thread titled "long/flat nosed F. vittata" from the "South American Catfishes (Loricariidae - Plecos et al)" forum into the "What is my Catfish?" forum. It's the one in the link above.

Thanks

Thanks, that's perfect. Maybe more people will see it there.
