while hunting after the elusive(to me it seems) madtom, I did net a small white sucker.
I've grown attached to the little guy and was wondering if anyone else has kept them, and how their classified.
Also any pointers on finding madtoms would be nice...I'm guessing they like little cave areas?? All I find are crawdads when I look...oh well
The white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) is a catostomid, a group of fishes closely related to minnows (aquarists are more familiar with another catostomid, the Asian high fin loach, Myxocyprinus asiaticus). Suckers as a whole grow fairly large and are not really suitable for the aquarium (the white sucker maxes out at 25").
Most madtoms are found in riffles or quiet backwaters of clear, high gradient streams. They are best collected by seine on riffles, by examining sunken cans, and by kicking over rocks and woody debris anywhere with the seine butted up against the disrupted material (from Goldstein et al.).
